Ayodele Law is a growing immigration and refugee law firm based in Toronto. We represent individuals and families in immigration and refugee matters, including refugee claims, refugee appeals, sponsorship applications and appeals, removal matters, inadmissibility issues, and Federal Court judicial review.
We are looking for a part-time Immigration & Refugee Lawyer to support our principal lawyer, Tracy Ayodele, with hearings, appeals, and litigation-focused immigration work.
This is an independent contractor role for a lawyer with approximately 3–4 years of experience in Canadian immigration and refugee law. The ideal candidate will have experience before the Refugee Protection Division, Refugee Appeal Division, Immigration Appeal Division, and the Federal Court of Canada. The lawyer must also be empanelled with Legal Aid Ontario for refugee and immigration matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent clients in refugee protection claims before the Refugee Protection Division
- Represent clients in appeals before the Refugee Appeal Division
- Represent clients in matters before the Immigration Appeal Division, including sponsorship appeals and residency obligation appeals
- Assist with Federal Court judicial review matters, including leave applications, written submissions, application records, and hearings
- Prepare clients and witnesses for hearings
- Review Basis of Claim forms, narratives, disclosure, country condition evidence, tribunal records, refusal decisions, GCMS notes, and supporting documentation
- Communicate with clients in a clear, compassionate, and professional manner
- Work closely with Tracy Ayodele and the legal support team to move files forward efficiently
- Ensure all deadlines, procedural rules, filing requirements, and Legal Aid Ontario requirements are met
Required Qualifications
- Lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Approximately 3–4 years of experience in Canadian immigration and refugee law
- Empanelled with Legal Aid Ontario for immigration and/or refugee law matters
- Experience before the Refugee Protection Division
- Experience before the Refugee Appeal Division
- Experience before the Immigration Appeal Division
- Experience with Federal Court judicial review matters
- Strong legal drafting, legal research, and written advocacy skills
- Strong oral advocacy and hearing preparation experience
- Ability to manage litigation deadlines and client files with appropriate supervision
- Strong understanding of Canadian immigration and refugee law
- Excellent client communication and trauma-informed advocacy skills
- Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working with a small boutique law firm
Preferred Experience
- Experience with refugee claims, refugee refusals, sponsorship refusals, removal orders, residency obligation appeals, inadmissibility matters, and mandamus applications
- Experience preparing application records and written arguments for Federal Court
- Experience conducting oral advocacy before tribunals and courts
- Familiarity with Legal Aid Ontario billing, certificates, disbursements, and reporting requirements
- Experience working with legal assistants or clerks on refugee, appeal, and litigation files
- Additional language skills are an asset
Hours and Workload
This is a part-time contract role requiring approximately 16–20 hours per week, depending on file volume, hearing schedules, deadlines, and the candidate’s availability.
Most work may be completed remotely; however, the right candidate must be available to appear at hearings at the Federal Court in Toronto.
Contractor Structure
This is an independent contractor position, not an employee role. The successful candidate will provide legal services as an independent contract lawyer and will be responsible for their own taxes, CPP contributions, EI, HST registration/remittance where applicable, Law Society obligations, professional insurance, and business expenses unless otherwise agreed in writing.
The contractor will invoice Ayodele Law monthly and will be expected to manage their own schedule, subject to client needs, hearing dates, filing deadlines, and agreed firm requirements.
Pay: From $60,000.00 per year
