Join our St. Michael’s Hospital team as we work to put patients and families at the centre of everything we do, in the role of Occupational Therapist/Physical Therapist Assistant (OT/PT Assistant) on our Stroke and Neurology Team.
Seeking an OT/PT Assistant with excellent communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills who is comfortable working with stroke and neurology inpatients. This position will be primarily responsible for carrying out treatment to inpatients, as assigned by either the Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist throughout the Stroke and Neurology program.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The primary role of the OT/PT Assistant is to implement therapeutic programs for patients as assigned and/or supervised by the Occupational Therapist and/or the Physical Therapist. This includes the management of patient-related equipment and therapeutic tools.
- Works effectively as a member of an interprofessional team, collaborating with other disciplines to provide comprehensive patient care
- Contributes to the academic mandate of the organization as an educator, resource or support for staff, students and members of the academic and professional community
- Identifies and addresses educational needs for patients and their families
- Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development in order to continue to provide optimal patient care
- Is committed to, and participates in, ongoing quality improvement in the organization
- Provides patient care in accordance with all professional and organizational standards
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an accredited combined OTA/PTA program;
- Current BLS (or willingness to complete within probationary period);
- 1-2 years experience working in acute care, Internal Medicine and/or Geriatric experience preferred
- Must demonstrate experience with cognitive treatment and retraining and delirium
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
- Ability to modify interventions quickly in accordance to changes in patient status required
- Ability to carry out directions of therapists and modify interventions quickly in accordance to changes in patient status as required;
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and critical thinking skills;
- Proven flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment;
- Excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills as relates to patient care;
- Demonstrated advocacy, commitment to and involvement with profession preferred (e.g. involvement with professional network, representation on relevant committees).
