Position Summary
At Serious Coffee, our Baristas are the heart of the customer experience. They are responsible for preparing exceptional coffee and food, delivering friendly and efficient service, and maintaining a clean, welcoming café environment. Every interaction should reflect our commitment to quality, consistency, and community while creating memorable experiences for every guest.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Welcome every customer with a genuine, friendly attitude.
- Take customer orders accurately and efficiently.
- Build relationships with regular guests and create a welcoming atmosphere.
- Resolve customer concerns professionally and escalate issues when required.
- Promote current products, seasonal beverages, and food offerings.
Beverage Preparation
- Prepare espresso-based beverages according to Serious Coffee recipes and standards.
- Brew coffee and tea while maintaining freshness and quality standards.
- Steam milk correctly and produce consistent microfoam.
- Prepare iced beverages, smoothies, frappés, and specialty drinks.
- Monitor beverage quality and presentation before serving.
Food Preparation
- Prepare breakfast sandwiches, wraps, and other menu items according to recipes.
- Heat and present food safely and consistently.
- Ensure proper food handling and sanitation practices.
- Monitor food freshness and rotate stock using FIFO principles.
Café Operations
- Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system accurately.
- Process cash, debit, credit, and gift card transactions.
- Maintain accurate cash handling procedures.
- Restock beverages, food displays, cups, and supplies.
- Assist with receiving deliveries and inventory counts.
- Support opening and closing procedures.
Cleanliness & Food Safety
- Maintain exceptional cleanliness throughout the café.
- Clean espresso machines, grinders, brewing equipment, and workstations.
- Wash dishes and sanitize food preparation areas.
- Follow WorkSafeBC and FoodSafe guidelines.
- Ensure customer seating areas, washrooms, and service counters remain clean and inviting.
Teamwork
- Work collaboratively with fellow team members.
- Communicate effectively during busy periods.
- Support new employees during training.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful workplace culture.
Qualifications
- Previous café, restaurant, or customer service experience is considered an asset.
- FoodSafe Level 1 certification is an asset.
- Cash handling experience is preferred.
- Passion for coffee and customer service.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
Skills & Abilities

- Comfortable standing for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 20 kg (45 lbs).
Working Conditions
- Early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required.
- Fast-paced café environment.
- Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and repetitive movements.
- Exposure to hot beverages, kitchen equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
