Role and Objectives:
The general labourer, reporting to the Resource Supervisor, plays a key support role in our sawmill operations by maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient work environment. This includes facility and yard cleanup, waste and dust management, basic equipment operation, and assisting with seasonal duties as required.
Responsibilities:
- Understand and comply with all company policies and procedures
- Respect and respond to direction given
- Thorough cleaning of the facility, and maintaining operations yard, Shipping, Log Yard, Kilns, Dry Sheds, etc., but not limited to:
- Locking out equipment and removing debris in all areas
- Blowing out selected areas in a safe manner with respect to equipment operations and handling combustible dust
- Mill operating floors
- Maintaining low levels of combustible dust through knocking dust off electrical cabinets, wainscoting dust removal (around KLC walls)
- Dumping and replacing trim end bins
- Safely using chipper to dispose of chippable material
- Safely use basic hand tools and approved power tools (brooms, hoses, drills, blowers, saws, and other devices as needed.)
- Basic Janitorial duties – sweeping/mopping offices and lunchroom floors, removing recycling and garbage’s
- Periodic cleaning of requested items such as forklifts, company vehicles, etc.
- Emptying of garbage’s throughout the facilities on a regular basis
- Fall/Winter: Support take down watering systems, winterizing wells, fireboxes and other structures. Perform snow removal tasks (shoveling, salting, skidsteer snow removal) to support production continuity during cold/inclement weather.
- Provide coverage in entry level operation roles such as Planer Piling, Strap and Wrap Support, Reman Banding
- Ability to learn and be efficient and safe in operations of various pieces of mobile equipment including, but not limited to:
- Ability to learn, be efficient and safe in operating power tools including, but not limited to chainsaws, drills, etc.
- Spring/Summer: Support groundskeeping, weed trimming, debris removal, and general yard tidiness. Support in basic fire mitigation work along highways and property lines. Including support in set-up watering systems for dust mitigation, fire prevention, and lumber/log preservation.
- Assisting in training other teammates
- Assist in developing, reviewing, and approving role specific operations manuals and safety documentation
- Complete other responsibilities as assigned
Requirements:
- High School Diploma, or equivalent GED, etc.
- Experience in industrial environments, an asset
- Experience in operating mobile equipment
- Experience in operating hand-tools and power tools, an asset
- Driver’s License and clean driving abstract, as use of Company Vehicles is expected
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to noise, dust, weather, and heavy equipment activity, and overlapping work-zones
- Exposure to safety lockouts and access to equipment
- Requires frequent walking, bending, lifting (up to 40-50 lbs) and use of hand tools
- Ability to hear, and talk, occasionally on radio in an industrial setting
- Occasional climbing and carrying
- Required to wear appropriate PPE at all times
- Work may involve standing or walking for extended periods
- Flexibility to adjust tasks during production changes, downtime, or emergent operational needs
Compensation Package:
- Salary: $28.75/hour
- Schedule: Four (4) days on, four (4) days off, 12/hour shifts
- Shift rotates every two (2) weeks between day shift (6:00am – 6:00pm) and nights (6:00pm – 6:00am)
