The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. In addition, the ACPS develops criminal law policy for the province and supports criminal law consultation with other levels of government.

Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), ACPS, the Chief Crown Prosecutor, Appeals and Specialized Prosecutions will provide strategic leadership and ensure the branch remains aligned with ministry and government key strategies and outcomes. In this role you will provide direction and leadership on all matters relating to the administration of criminal justice related to the mandate of specialized prosecutions and appeals. Appeals are conducted on behalf of the Attorney General of Alberta in the Court of Appeal of Alberta and the Supreme Court of Canada. Speciazlized prosecutions includes complex commercial crime, internet and technology crime, organized crime, sensitive cases, environmental and occupational health and safety prosecutions and the coordination of high-risk offenders.
In this role, you will lead the office in such a way that instills and maintains public confidence that an independent and professional prosecution service operates to deliver high quality prosecutions, contribute to improved policy by providing advice and recommendations and raising policy issues. You will lead the criminal appeals and interventions in high level courts, address complaints of wrongful convictions or miscarriages of justice and seek to enhance the prosecution of serious and violent crime through amendments to federal legislation.
Fostering a collaborative approach to the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases, you will build linkages across government, with Judiciary, Court, Criminal Defence Bar, Law Enforcement, community agencies and other stakeholders. You will act as a liaison and ensure there is integration of systems with police and investigative agencies, the courts, other divisions within Alberta Justice, other departments of the Government of Alberta, and community groups and agencies. You will also participate in law reform activities, providing legal advice, communication support and strategy. Contributing as a member of the senior management team and providing sound advice to the ADM will be key to the achievement of corporate goals.
Your background includes extensive related senior management and criminal law experience:
- Minimum of 15+ years of senior assessed legal experience.
- Minimum of 5+ years in a senior management role.
- Experience with legal appeals and specialized, complex prosecutions.
- Budget and financial planning experience; and
- Human resources experience.
You are an autonomous, hands‑on leader who confidently makes independent decisions, provides clear direction, drives team performance, and delivers results through a practical, vision‑led leadership approach. Exceptional issues management, communication and relationship building skills are critical for working collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders. Your demonstrated skills in system thinking, strategic business planning, and resource management will set a course for the success of the Appeals and Specialized Prosecutions Office.
A law degree and membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta is required.
Thorough understanding of relevant legislation, working understanding of project management and change management practices and principles will also support your success in this role.
$8,040.87 to $10,567.19 biweekly ($209,866.71 to $275,803.66 yearly)
The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service offices are located in Edmonton, Calgary and regional offices located in northern and southern Alberta.
This is a full-time, permanent opportunity traditionally located in Edmonton or Calgary. However, candidates who reside in any region are strongly encouraged to apply.
Travel within the province will be required as part of your responsibilities.
