Description:
EDTL 634: Underpinnings of educational theories and current research in secondary social sciences education. Topics include the nature, content, methodology and implications of professional practice, including a focus on geography as addressed in the secondary school curriculum. Mobilization of digital technologies and relevant Quebec Ministry of Education professional competencies for teachers.
EDTL 612: The culture and citizenship in Quebec program for secondary schools, focusing on the conceptual framework, philosophical orientations and teaching practices, including mobilization of digital technologies. Relevant Quebec Ministry of Education professional competencies for teachers are addressed and assessed throughout.
This course is not Team taught or offered online.

Teaching Qualification Requirements (TQRs):
Education:
1. Master educator with a minimum completed master’s degree in a relevant field. PhD preferred.
2. Strong grounding in citizenship education, social studies education theory, curriculum, and pedagogical approaches relevant to the Quebec secondary education context.
Experience:
1. School-based teaching experience in secondary social studies disciplines, including geography, preferably in Quebec.
2. Experience supporting teacher candidates in teacher education and/or social science methods course contexts.
3. Expert knowledge of:
The Québec Education Program (QEP), including competencies and curriculum expectations relevant to secondary social studies disciplines, including geography and related programs.
Educational theories and current research relevant to social studies education.
Advanced pedagogical approaches for teaching social studies, including inquiry, interpretation, critical analysis, and disciplinary thinking.
The nature, content, and methodology of teaching social studies subjects in secondary school contexts, including a focus on geography in the secondary curriculum.
Planning, instructional, and assessment practices relevant to secondary social studies teaching.
Equity-oriented, inclusive, and critically informed approaches in social studies education.
Integration of digital technologies in social studies teaching and learning.
Professional competency frameworks and professional repository documentation relevant to teacher education.
4. Experience supporting teacher candidates in planning, implementing, rehearsing, and reflecting on social science teaching practices.
5. Experience facilitating practice-based, collaborative, and discussion-based learning environments.
6. Experience connecting curriculum, research, and classroom practice in social sciences education.
Other:
1. Knowledge of the impact and experience integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion
2. Familiarity using myCourses, Zoom and/or other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences
3. Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital teaching and learning tools
4. Familiarity teaching blended classes
5. Instruction in this course may be delivered remotely if indicated as required by the university.
