Role Description
This position is a unionized role through the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW).
A Journeyperson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician is a skilled trades professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) systems in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.
Working from blueprints, technical drawings, and system specifications, the journeyperson ensures HVACR systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes and regulations. This role may involve working independently or leading apprentices and junior team members on job sites.
Key Responsibilities
Installation
- Install and commission refrigeration, air conditioning, and HVAC equipment including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and air handling systems.
- Install refrigeration piping, refrigerant lines, and related system components.
- Install and connect electrical and control systems associated with HVACR equipment.
- Coordinate system installation with other trades and project teams on job sites.
Maintenance and Repairs
- Diagnose and repair HVACR system issues including refrigerant leaks, electrical faults, compressor failures, and airflow problems.
- Perform preventative maintenance on refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
- Repair or replace components such as compressors, motors, thermostats, valves, and control systems.
- Respond to service calls and emergency repairs as required.
Blueprint and Specification Interpretation
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and project specifications.
- Verify system layout, measurements, and equipment placement prior to installation.
- Identify potential system issues and recommend practical solutions.
System Testing and Commissioning
- Test HVACR systems to ensure proper operation and efficiency.
- Charge systems with refrigerant and verify system pressures and temperatures.
- Perform system balancing, calibration, and commissioning as required.
Quality Control
- Ensure all work meets applicable mechanical codes, safety standards, and company quality requirements.
- Inspect completed installations and repairs for accuracy and functionality.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship and attention to detail.
Safety Compliance
- Follow all workplace safety procedures and regulations.
- Handle refrigerants and related materials in accordance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment.
Mentorship and Team Support
- Provide guidance and mentorship to apprentices and helpers.
- Support team members with technical knowledge and best practices.
- Promote a collaborative and professional work environment.
Person Specifics and Qualifications
- Journeyperson Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (313A) Certification (required)
- Ozone Depletion Prevention (ODP) Certification (required)
- Experience in commercial and/or industrial HVACR systems preferred
- Gas Technician (G2 or G3) Certification considered an asset
- Strong knowledge of refrigeration systems, controls, and safety regulations
- Valid driver’s licence
Work Environment
- This is a fulltime, in onsite position without the possibility of being remote.
