We are looking for a Commercial Underwriter to join our Professional Services Team. In this role, you will play a key part in driving the company’s growth and profitability by building and expanding a book of new business. You will assess the acceptability of new submissions and develop strong broker relationships, leveraging your expertise, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset to identify and capitalize on new business opportunities.
You will work closely with experienced practice leaders, managers, and executives, supported by an extensive product range, ample capacity, and the empowerment needed to succeed. In collaboration with colleagues and management, you will deliver value-added expertise and exceptional service to our broker partners.
This is a hybrid/remote position with the preference to be based in Ontario.
In this position you will:
- Drive new business production by actively prospecting, quoting, and binding new submissions in alignment with company guidelines and profitability goals;
- Build and maintain strong broker relationships through proactive outreach, prompt service, and a solutions-oriented approach that positions SPG as a preferred market;
- Perform risk analysis using internal and external data resources to evaluate, price, and negotiate new and renewal opportunities across risks of low to moderate complexity;
- Negotiate coverage terms with brokers within delegated authority parameters;
- Handle endorsement requests and renewal business within delegated authority, engaging brokers independently to clarify intent or obtain missing information;
- Manage, strengthen, and grow a profitable book of business with a focus on new business development;
- Make sound decisions based on imperfect information, maintaining a positive outlook and recovering quickly from setbacks;
- Communicate decisions and respond to broker and internal requests in a prompt and professional manner;
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including attending industry seminars and networking events as needed;
- Maintain compliance with established corporate guidelines and delegated authority parameters;
- Document assigned files to meet documentation standards, maintaining a paper-free environment by uploading materials to company software; and
- Complete loss reports and post-claim underwriting reviews as required.
You’re a good fit if you have:
- Have up to 5 years of relevant experience in Professional Lines underwriting or brokering experience
- Knowledge in Professional Lines Risks (Tech, Cyber, Media and Misc Professional Liability, etc.)
- Experience in an MGA environment is an asset
- Hold a Charted Insurance Professional (CIP) designation (or are actively pursuing)
- Hold a broker license or can qualify for a license within 90 days
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Familiar with basic legal structures in Canada

The expected salary range for this position is from $65,000 – $85,000 and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
