Cabinet Drafter & Estimator (Custom Millwork)

About the Position
Nickels Custom Cabinets is seeking an experienced Cabinet Drafter & Estimator to join our team in Richmond, BC.
This role is ideal for someone with a strong background in custom cabinetry, millwork, AutoCAD drafting, and estimating. The successful candidate will assist with preparing preliminary designs, developing budget pricing, researching materials and hardware, and creating detailed production-ready drawings for custom cabinetry projects.
This position will support the sales team by preparing preliminary cabinet layouts, researching materials, and developing budget estimates for prospective clients before projects move into engineering and production.
IMPORTANT:
This position is specifically for candidates with previous experience in custom cabinetry, millwork, or architectural woodworking.
Key Responsibilities
Drafting & Design
- Review architectural plans, sketches, and client-provided drawings.
- Translate preliminary concepts into detailed cabinet and millwork drawings.
- Create accurate AutoCAD drawings for custom cabinetry projects.
- Develop production-ready shop drawings and technical details.
- Generate cabinet layouts, elevations, sections, and detailed dimensions.
- Ensure drawings meet manufacturing requirements and company standards.
- Identify construction details, cabinet specifications, and technical requirements for production.
Estimating & Pricing
- Prepare preliminary budget pricing and ballpark estimates for prospective clients.
- Review project requirements and determine the scope of work for custom cabinetry and millwork projects.
- Perform quantity take-offs and material calculations.
- Assist with preparing detailed quotations and project estimates.
- Identify labour requirements and manufacturing considerations that impact pricing.
- Update pricing information and maintain estimating databases as required.
Sales & Client Support
- Assist the sales team by preparing preliminary cabinet layouts and conceptual designs for prospective clients.
- Develop ballpark budgets and preliminary quotations during the early stages of the sales process.
- Research materials, hardware, accessories, and specialty products required for custom projects.
- Request pricing and product information from suppliers and manufacturers.
- Prepare preliminary material lists and identify potential cost-saving alternatives when required.
- Maintain current knowledge of cabinetry trends, materials, hardware, and manufacturing methods.
Qualifications
Required
- Extensive experience in cabinetry, millwork, or custom woodworking.
- Advanced AutoCAD drafting skills.
- Experience creating full sets of shop and production drawings.
- Strong understanding of cabinet construction methods and manufacturing processes.
- Experience preparing estimates, quotations, or budget pricing for cabinetry or millwork projects.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and specifications.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred
- Experience with custom residential cabinetry and high-end millwork projects.
- Knowledge of cabinetry materials, hardware, finishes, and supplier networks.
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate has a strong technical background in custom cabinetry and millwork, combined with estimating and pricing experience. They understand how cabinetry is designed, built, priced, and installed, and can confidently support projects from the initial concept stage through production.
This individual will be responsible for helping develop preliminary designs, preparing ballpark budgets, researching materials, and producing accurate drawings that support both sales and manufacturing.
Important Requirement
All candidates MUST submit a portfolio showcasing AutoCAD drafting work, shop drawings, or millwork projects they have completed.
