About Tonari Gumi
Tonari Gumi is a non-profit organization serving Japanese Canadian seniors and the broader community in Metro Vancouver since 1974. Our mission is to improve quality of life through independence, friendships, and affirmation of cultural heritage. We provide programs and services that promote healthy aging, social connection, and community engagement.
We are looking for a caring, energetic, and organized Program Assistant to support our Genki Gumi and Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS).

Position Summary
The Program Assistant supports the Program Coordinator in planning, preparing, and delivering engaging programs that promote physical activity, cognitive wellness, social interaction, and cultural connection for seniors.
The successful candidate will help create a welcoming environment while assisting participants, volunteers, instructors, and staff with daily program operations.
Schedule
- 20–25 hours per week
- Must be available: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
- Work takes place at our Vancouver office and satellite locations in Metro Vancouver (currently Richmond, Coquitlam, and Surrey).
Responsibilities
Program Support
- Assist with planning and delivering Genki Gumi and TAPS programs
- Prepare activity materials and equipment
- Set up and clean up program spaces
- Transport and organize supplies for satellite programs
Program Delivery
- Welcome participants and create an inclusive environment
- Assist exercise instructors and activity facilitators
- Support seniors during exercise, games, crafts, brain training, and recreational activities
- Provide one-on-one assistance when needed
- Observe participant well-being and communicate concerns to the Program Coordinator
Volunteer Support
- Help guide and support volunteers
- Assign volunteer tasks during programs
- Foster a positive team environment
Administrative Support
- Respond to participant and community inquiries
- Assist with registrations and attendance records
- Provide general administrative support to the Programs Department
Qualifications
We're looking for someone who:
- Enjoys working with seniors
- Is friendly, patient, compassionate, and dependable
- Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Is well organized and able to multitask
- Can work independently and as part of a team
- Is comfortable supporting individuals with varying physical and cognitive abilities
- Is proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other basic computer applications
Language Requirements
- English (spoken and written)
- Japanese language skills (spoken and written) are a strong asset
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with seniors
- Experience in recreation, wellness, community, or non-profit programs
- First Aid/CPR Certification (asset)
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence (asset)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry program supplies
- Frequent standing, bending, and moving equipment
- Ability to travel to satellite program locations throughout Metro Vancouver
