RCM Guitar Teacher (Contractor) at Musical Minds Academy
Musical Minds Academy is a growing music school in Surrey serving 115+ students. Founded by an ARCT pianist with a background in behavioural neuroscience, we blend high-quality music instruction with a science-informed approach to learning. This fall we are launching a brand new guitar program built on the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Certificate Program, and we are looking for a passionate teacher to help build it from the ground up.
Why this role is different
This is not stepping into someone else's roster. It is a chance to shape a new RCM-aligned guitar program, starting with students from our existing waitlist and community.
- Build your own schedule. Tell us your availability, whether weekday afternoons, evenings, Saturdays, or any mix, and we fill it with students.
- We handle the business side. Scheduling, billing, parent communication, and student recruitment are all managed by our admin team. You just show up and teach.
- Room to grow. This is a ground-floor opportunity in a new program at an established, expanding school. As the program grows, so does your studio.
What you will do
- Teach one-on-one guitar lessons (30, 45, or 60 minutes) following the RCM guitar syllabus, from Preparatory through the intermediate grades
- Prepare students for RCM examinations, including repertoire, technique, ear training, and sight reading
- Guide students toward exam readiness with clear goal-setting each term
- Track progress and communicate with families through our studio management system
- Take part in school events such as our seasonal recitals and exam preparation workshops
What we are looking for
- Strong classical and/or acoustic guitar proficiency
- Working knowledge of the RCM guitar syllabus and examination process
- Experience teaching guitar to children and teens
- A warm, patient, and encouraging teaching style, especially with young beginners
- Reliable and professional communication with students and families
- Legally able to work in Canada; a clear Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector) is required before starting
Nice to have, not required
- RCM certification (such as an ARCT or teacher certification through the RCM Certificate Program)
- A track record of preparing students for RCM guitar exams with strong results
- Post-secondary music education or equivalent training
- Ability to teach electric guitar, ukulele, or bass as a secondary offering
Compensation and details
- $30 to $37 per teaching hour, based on experience and credentials
- Independent contractor position
- In-studio teaching at our Surrey location; studio space and scheduling provided
- Flexible start date, with program launch targeted for September 2026
To apply, send your resume and a short note about your teaching approach and RCM experience. Videos of your playing or teaching are welcome but not required. We review applications on a rolling basis.
