Purpose:
Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society (Bent Arrow) is a non-profit organization that provides unique programs and services to Edmonton’s urban Indigenous population. The organization was created in 1994 when Brad and Shauna Seneca identified the need for programming for Indigenous children and families based in traditional Indigenous values and teachings. This year we are celebrating our 30 anniversary, and we have grown as an agency where we have over 250 staff and 23 programs, but our mission remains to “build on the strengths of Aboriginal children, youth, and their families to enable them to develop spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally so they can walk proudly in both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities.”
The Program:
The Warriors Way Program is in partnership with Edmonton Police Service that assists with community reintegration of BIPOC populations in the Edmonton Area, specifically adults and youth that are previously/currently incarcerated. We provide support in the areas of housing, addictions, counselling to support mental health, family reunification, life skills and employment skills development with the goal of stabilization and securing employment, returning to school and/or engaging in an employment training program.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Establish relationship-based practice and build positive rapport with high-risk clients, family members & their professional supports while working closely alongside Edmonton Police Officers and collaborating with community partners.
- Assist and develop release plans for clients currently incarcerated. Develop a detailed case plan for clients newly reintegrating into society over the course of 12 months.
- Provide support and resources to clients & families in accessing applicable community resources.
- Provide crisis intervention and safety planning to clients.
- Advocate ensuring basic needs of clients are being met.
- Respect and meet the various cultural needs of the participant.
- Provide guidance and support and make referrals for participant on issues related to health, family, addictions, justice, education, employment, recreation and housing.
- Establish working relationships with other community service agencies within the field.
- Evening Work/Shift Work as required for on-call purposes.
- Any other related tasks assigned by Supervisor/Team Lead.
Competencies:
Essential:
- Must have own vehicle and be willing to transport clients.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and willing to obtain a drivers abstract
- Must have 2-million-dollar liability insurance coverage
- Must provide a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector and Intervention Record Check (within a 6-month period from date of completion).
Qualifications:
Experience:
- Knowledge of indigenous peoples, new immigrants, ethno-cultural groups and vulnerable populations.
- Knowledge of addictions, gangs, sexual exploitation, houselessness, poverty, use and neglect.
- Knowledge of youth criminal justice system would be an asset
- Basic computer and report writing skills, including Microsoft Office and experience working with data bases.
- Ability to model and teach appropriate behaviors such as communication, conflict management, problem solving, decision making and non-abuse behavior management.
- Strong interpersonal skills with good oral and written communication.
- Knowledge of the Indigenous culture.
Education:
- Human Services degree or diploma; with a minimum of 2 years of relevant related experience. A combination of related work experience would also be considered.
Salary: $54,300.00 - $57,015.00
