Job Summary
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our finance team. In this role, you will be instrumental in managing core accounting functions, ensuring accurate financial records, and supporting the overall financial health of our organization. Your expertise will help us maintain compliance, streamline processes, and provide valuable insights into our financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the full cycle of day-to-day bookkeeping, including accounts maintenance, revenue recognition, payroll processing, bank and credit card reconciliations, and general ledger entries.
- Prepare and remit payroll source deductions, HST/GST, corporate taxes, and other government filings in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
- Prepare fiscal year-end working papers and assist in the preparation of financial statements in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
- Monitor and analyze cash flow, prepare cash flow forecasts, and provide recommendations to optimize working capital and liquidity.
- Develop financial plans, budgets, and forecasts in collaboration with management to support operational and strategic objectives.
- Conduct variance analysis by comparing actual financial performance against budgets and forecasts, identifying trends and providing actionable recommendations.
- Prepare personal income tax returns and assist clients with tax compliance and filing requirements.
- Support corporate and personal tax planning initiatives by identifying tax-saving opportunities and ensuring compliance with current tax legislation.
- Assist with financial reporting, month-end and year-end closing processes, and the preparation of management reports.
- Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support business planning, operational improvements, and decision-making.
- Liaise with external accountants, auditors, financial institutions, and government agencies as required.
- Stay current with changes in accounting standards, tax legislation, and industry best practices.
Skills
- Proficiency in accounting software including QuickBooks, Sage, or similar platforms.
- Strong knowledge of bookkeeping principles, account reconciliation, and bank reconciliation procedures.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing.
- Understanding of corporate finance concepts such as budgeting and account analysis.
- Ability to perform auditing tasks accurately and efficiently.
- Excellent attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate across teams and support audit processes.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA designation or progress toward CPA certification is considered an asset.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, payroll, and tax regulations.
- Experience preparing financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and tax returns.
- Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
