GTA General Contractors is a growing Commercial General Construction company specializing in commercial, industrial, office, retail, healthcare, institutional, and recreational construction projects across Ontario. We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Construction Estimator to join our team and play a key role in preparing competitive, accurate, and well-developed estimates for a wide range of projects.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the Construction Estimator will be responsible for preparing complete project estimates from concept through tender, coordinating with subcontractors and suppliers, reviewing drawings and specifications, identifying project risks and opportunities, and supporting business development efforts. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of all major construction disciplines, including civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, and electrical systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate quantity take-offs and detailed cost estimates.
- Review drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, and tender documents.
- Solicit, evaluate, and level subcontractor and supplier quotations.
- Develop budgets, Class D through Class A estimates, and tender submissions.
- Analyze project risks, constructability, and value engineering opportunities.
- Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, clients, and internal project teams.
- Prepare detailed scopes of work and bid comparison summaries.
- Attend site visits, pre-bid meetings, and tender closings as required, gathering necessary site-related information for pricing and confirming drawing details to site conditions.
- Prepare and submit Request for Information (RFI's) to clients, architects, consultants as needed.
- Maintain estimating databases, subcontractor lists, and historical cost information.
- Assist with Design-Build proposals, conceptual budgeting, and pre-construction services.
- Support project handoffs to Operations upon successful award.
- Support the Operations team on active projects by reviewing, clarifying, and confirming project scopes, subtrade quotes and budgets as required.
Qualifications
- 3–4 years of estimating experience with a General Contractor or Construction Manager.
- Postsecondary education in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, Quantity Surveying, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
- Strong knowledge of civil, structural, architectural, mechanical (MEP), and electrical construction systems.
- Experience estimating commercial, industrial, institutional, retail, office, or healthcare projects.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical drawings and specifications.
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, and building methods.
- Experience obtaining and evaluating subcontractor quotations.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tenders simultaneously while meeting strict deadlines.
- Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Construction Management, General Contracting, Design-Build and negotiated projects.
- Familiarity with Bluebeam, Procore, AutoCAD, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff, or similar estimating and tendering software.
- Knowledge of CCDC contracts, procurement methods, and Ontario construction practices.
- Existing relationships with Ontario subcontractors and suppliers are considered an asset.
