About Recess Athletics Club
Recess Athletics Club is a FIBA regulation facility and official Canada Basketball Jr. NBA affiliate in Markham, ON. We develop athletes across every stage of the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) pathway — from recreational players discovering the game for the first time through to competitive, post-secondary, and professional-level athletes. Every session is coached. Every rep has a purpose. Our coaches are expected to model the same professionalism, discipline, and character we ask of our athletes.
The Role
We are looking for a coach and trainer with a deep understanding of the Long Term Athlete Development pathway and the ability to coach effectively at every stage — recreational, foundational, developmental, competitive, and elite. You read the room, meet athletes where they are, and hold a high standard doing it. Character development is not secondary to skill development here — it is the job. You show up early, in uniform, and ready. You set the tone before the session starts.
ResponsibilitiesCoaching & Training
- Coach Foundations & Development (5:00–6:30 PM) — fundamentals and skill-building for recreational and developmental athletes U14 and under
- Coach Performance & Competition (6:30–8:00 PM) — game-speed reps, scrimmages, and competitive situations for athletes U14 and over
- Deliver 1-on-1 and small group private training sessions; complete athlete development documentation for 10-pack clients
- Adapt drills, intensity, and instruction in real time to the LTAD stage of each athlete — recreational through elite, often within the same session
- Deliver summer and holiday camp programming (ages 7–18, full and half day)
League & Event Support
- Operate scoreboard and game clock for leagues, tournaments, and in-house events
- Coordinate team check-ins, warm-up windows, and game flow on event days
- Support setup, breakdown, and on-floor supervision for all events
Professionalism & Standards
- Arrive early — facility and court are set before the first athlete walks in
- Wear the Recess uniform for all sessions, events, and shifts — no exceptions
- Reinforce accountability, effort, respect, and resilience in every session
- Complete all required certifications: background check (Certn), Game Plan, Safe Sport
- Book and record all sessions through Court Reserve
Facility Duties
- Deep clean the facility on a scheduled and as-needed basis — courts, bleachers, glass, change areas, and washrooms
- Sweep, mop, and inspect court surfaces before and after sessions
- Manage equipment inventory and complete opening and closing checklists
- Flag maintenance issues or safety concerns to management immediately
What We Are Looking ForRequired
- Thorough knowledge of the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) pathway and how to apply it across recreational, developmental, competitive, and elite athletes
- Proven ability to coach athletes at all stages — recreational beginners, youth (U14), high school, and post-secondary or professional — adjusting approach, language, and drill design accordingly
- Committed to athlete character development — you coach the whole person, not just the player
- Punctual, self-accountable, and professional in appearance and conduct at all times
- Strong communicator — builds trust quickly with athletes of all ages, parents, and staff
- Open availability — evenings, weekends, and daytime hours as scheduled
Assets
- Playing experience at the post-secondary, semi-professional, or professional level
- NCCP certification or active pursuit
- Experience with Jr. NBA or Canada Basketball programming
