The Opportunity
The Senior Safety Officer (SSO) of Operations Enablement plays a key role in strengthening province-wide consistency and excellence in safety oversight. This role focuses on Safety Officer training and development, through in-field and virtual coaching, mentoring, and skills refinement. The SSO Operations Enablement provides guidance on technical decisions, operational practices, and code clarification and application. The SSO provides a quality-assurance function by conducting routine audits, identifying trends, and informing future training and process improvements. As a frontline support and subject matter resource, the SSO helps narrow variability in inspection outcomes and enhances operational effectiveness across all regions for the elevating technology.

Pay Grade: Grade 17, starting at $56.11/hour plus 5% TMA

Reports to: Leader, Operations Enablement
As a Senior Safety Officer, Operation Enablement, you will:
Lead New Safety Officer Training:
- Leads new Safety Officer training, and competency verification.
- Supports regional-based trainers of New Safety Officers.
- Partners with Standards and Technical Leadership Team, and Employee Learning & Development on Safety Officer Journey Maps and competency development.
Ongoing Safety Officer Mentorship & Development:
- Facilitates and plans ongoing Safety Officer development opportunities to increase alignment and standardization of assessment practices and adherence to operational guidance and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Performs routine audits in their respective technology to identify gaps and trends for future training and consistency opportunities.
- Develops and maintains decision logs around technical decisions for ongoing learning opportunities.
- Acts as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the Employee Learning and Development Team to help with training content, review, and facilitation.
Provide Safety Officer Support:
- Provides regular in-field and remote support to Safety Officers on initial code clarifications and application, operational practices and technical decision making. Acts as a “help line”. Travels to different regions regularly, spending up to 30% of their time in different regions.
- Manages requests for SSO support and triages and responds to requests in a timely manner.
Process Improvement & Workflow Efficiencies:
- Identifies and supports the implementation of digital tools and workflow efficiencies to help improve assessment consistency and reduce administrative work to create more SO field time.
- Represents Operations as a SME for organizational projects and initiatives
Program Support:
- Provides technical expertise to operational programs
- Lead technology-specific programs and initiatives
- Transportation technology variances
Client Questions:
- Addresses tier one questions on code clarification, application, and Jurisdiction questions. Responsible for addressing ‘tier-one’ inquiries.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience you have:
- 3 + years experience as a Safety Officer in related field
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship, Red Seal certification, or equivalent trade qualification in related field.
- Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills supplemented by above average facilitation and presentation skills.
- Ability to interpret and analyze reports with qualitative and quantitative data.
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence and requirement to travel throughout the province of BC up to 30% of the time.
- Experience leading project, familiarity of project management skills.
- Champion of change and innovation.
- Ability to influence people and lead behaviour change.
- Experience coaching and mentoring employees and teaching and educating the public.
- Ability to assist in developing operational process and procedures.
- Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to work in a digital environment and internal business process systems, such as Starlite, Online Services tools, Microsoft Office Suite, and Qlik.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the key principles of Reconciliation, including a commitment to building respectful relationships, supporting inclusive practices, and considering Indigenous perspectives in decision-making and engagement.
- Act as a champion for change by promoting the adoption of digital tools, automation, and innovative technologies to support continuous improvement in processes and service delivery.
- Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Strong inter-personal skills, with demonstrated experience in client service, and conflict resolution.
- Ability to influence cross functional teams.
Technology Specific Education & Experience
Elevating:
- Preference for a two-year diploma from a recognized Institute of Technology supplemented by 5 years of related experience as an elevator mechanic
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Elevating Safety Officer
