School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a 0.684 Outdoor Environmental Leadership Program Grade 7/8 teacher at W.E. Graham Community School in Slocan, B.C. This position is due to a leave of absence. The days and times will be determined by the Principal and successful candidate.
The awarded applicant will be innovative, creative, and demonstrate understanding of the BC Ed Plan, the new curriculum and the district’s student expectations. He/she will be a person who is continually striving to improve pedagogy in a changing educational environment.
Education & Certification
- Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or equivalent, with a focus on intermediate grades (Grade 7/8).
- Valid provincial teaching certification (e.g., BC Certificate of Qualification from the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care).
- Additional qualifications in Outdoor Education, Environmental Science, Physical Education, or Leadership (asset).
- First Aid & CPR certification ; Wilderness First Aid (WFA/WFR) is strongly preferred.
Professional Experience
- Minimum of 2–3 years teaching experience, preferably in intermediate or middle years (Grade 6–9).
- Demonstrated experience planning and leading outdoor education experiences (e.g., hiking, camping, canoeing, winter activities).
- Experience integrating cross-curricular learning in an inquiry/project-based or experiential learning model.
- Experience or training in place-based learning and Indigenous education perspectives (asset).
Leadership & Outdoor Skills
- Proficient in leading students in outdoor settings, with a strong understanding of risk management, safety protocols, and trip planning, particularly in the Slocan Valley
- Strong classroom management and group facilitation skills in both traditional and non-traditional settings.
- Capable of teaching and modeling leadership development, team-building, and resilience.
- Knowledge of Leave No Trace principles, environmental stewardship, and sustainable practices.
Personal Attributes
- Passion for the outdoors and enthusiasm for engaging students through experiential learning.
- Resilient, adaptable, and calm under pressure in dynamic environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, parents, and community partners.

- Willingness to participate in and lead multi-day excursions and overnight trips.
- Physically fit and able to meet the demands of active outdoor activities in varied weather conditions.

Salary Range; $68,589 - $114,833 per year, in accordance with the current SD8–Kootenay Lake / KLTF Collective Agreement. Placement on the salary grid is based on qualifications and years of teaching experience as evaluated by the BC Teacher Qualification Service (TQS).
