Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused Drill Locator to support Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) operations for underground utility installation projects across Ontario. The Drill Locator is responsible for accurately tracking and guiding the drill head during bore operations, ensuring safe installation of telecommunications, hydro, gas, water, and other underground infrastructure. The successful candidate will work closely with the Drill Operator and field crews to maintain productivity, quality, and compliance with all applicable regulations and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor underground locating equipment to accurately track the drill head and bore path.
- Communicate continuously with the Drill Operator to ensure precise bore alignment, depth, and direction.
- Read and interpret utility locates, construction drawings, site plans, and project specifications.
- Identify and verify existing underground utilities before and during drilling activities.
- Assist with site preparation, setup, bore planning, and drilling operations.
- Conduct pre-job hazard assessments and ensure compliance with company safety policies and Ontario health and safety regulations.
- Monitor drilling fluid returns and ground conditions to prevent utility strikes and environmental impacts.
- Maintain accurate records of bore paths, depths, and installed utilities.
- Assist with troubleshooting drilling challenges, including congested utility corridors and changing ground conditions.
- Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance of locating equipment and related tools.
- Coordinate effectively with project managers, supervisors, utility owners, inspectors, and customers.
- Support restoration and cleanup activities upon project completion.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a Drill Locator in underground utility construction.
- Working knowledge of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) equipment and locating systems.
- Ability to read and interpret utility locates, construction plans, and engineering drawings.
- Strong understanding of underground utility installation practices.
- Valid Ontario Class G driver's licence with a clean driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and on various terrain types.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
Preferred
- Experience with telecommunications, hydro, gas, water, or municipal infrastructure projects.
- AZ/DZ licence considered an asset.
Certifications

- Ontario Working at Heights
- Utility Safety Partners (Locate Awareness) or equivalent
- First Aid & CPR
- WHMIS
- Confined Space Awareness
- Traffic Control Person Certification
- Ontario Book 7 Traffic Control Training
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (23 kg).
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work in physically demanding environments for extended periods.
- Comfortable working outdoors year-round in Ontario weather conditions.
- Ability to travel to project sites throughout Ontario as required.
