Overview
Reporting to the VP Engineering, the Instrument Technologist supports the engineering team by developing and delivering instrumentation and controls design for assigned projects. This role prepares specifications and technical documents, performs sizing calculations, and coordinates the selection and procurement of instruments and fire & gas detection devices. The position also provides cross-discipline support and assists production and testing activities to ensure equipment meets project and code requirements.
Responsibilities
- Lead instrumentation activities on assigned projects
- Read and understand process flow diagrams, heat & material balances, hazardous area classification drawings, equipment layouts, and equipment datasheets as necessary to support instrumentation scope
- Develop instrumentation scope on P&IDs
- Perform sizing calculations for control valves, flow meters, PSVs, regulators, orifice plates, thermowells, level instruments, etc.
- Determine and specify design and operational requirements for specialty analyzers
- Create and maintain project instrument index, datasheets, pneumatic & impulse hook-up drawings, I/O list
- Specify, select, and purchase instrumentation for process equipment
- Specify, select, and purchase fire and gas detectors
- Review and follow project specific instrumentation specifications
- Apply relevant codes and standards including AER, IEC, CSA, ATEX, ISA, ASME and API, SIL/SIS
- Ensure instrumentation technical documents meet project specifications
- Calculate power & air consumptions for instrumentation
- Provide technical assistance on instrumentation scope to other disciplines
- Provide technical assistance to ALCO production team during fabrication and assembly
- Assist with FAT testing if required to ensure instrumentation is checked prior to departure from ALCO
- Knowledge of basic electrical design and architecture of PLC / DCS and control systems would be an asset
Qualifications / Experience
- Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline
- 3-7 years experience in instrumentation design, preferably in oil & gas, energy, in a fabrication facility
- Strong understanding of P&IDs, instrument datasheets, instrument index, I/O lists, loop drawings and hook-up details
- Experience with instrument and valve sizing calculations; familiarity with manufacturer software and sizing tools is an asset
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (CSA, IEC, ISA, API, ASME, SIL/SIS); hazardous area and fire & gas experience preferred
- Ability to interpret vendor drawings, review technical documents and support procurement, fabrication and FAT activities.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative approach to working across disciplines and with clients
- Demonstrate an ability to prioritize activities and stay focused in a dynamic ever-changing environment
- Ability to work under time constraints within a project team environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel
