Overview
At MKW Commercial Vehicles, we are passionate about building rugged, reliable, and innovative solutions for the commercial vehicle industry. We specialize in designing and manufacturing high-quality custom vehicle accessories, and we pride ourselves on precision, creativity, and rapid development. We are looking for a talented and detail-oriented Parts Designer to join our team and help us build the next generation of our accessory line.
The Role
As our Fusion 360 Parts Designer, you will be the bridge between concept and reality. You will be responsible for modeling custom accessory parts, developing efficient sheet metal flat patterns, and preparing precise 2D files for our laser cutters and CNC routers. The ideal candidate is an Autodesk Fusion 360 expert with a strong foundation in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) specifically geared toward flat-sheet materials and 2D profiling.
Key Responsibilities
- CAD Modeling & Flat Patterns: Designing and iterate custom vehicle accessory components in Fusion 360, heavily utilizing the Sheet Metal workspace to generate accurate flat patterns from 3D models.
- 2D DFM & Nesting: Optimizing designs for laser cutting and CNC routing (working with materials like aluminum, steel, plywood, and plastics). Maximize material yield through efficient part nesting and layout.
- File Preparation: Export and manage clean, production-ready DXF and DWG files, ensuring correct scaling, kerf compensation, continuous profiles, and appropriate tab placement.
- Technical Documentation: Create clear assembly instructions, precise bending diagrams (for press brakes), and bill of materials (BOMs) for the fabrication team.
- Prototyping & Testing: Work closely with the fabrication team to evaluate physical prototypes, troubleshoot fitment issues on the vehicles, and rapidly iterate on design flaws.
Required Qualifications (Must Have)
- Experience: 3 years of professional experience in mechanical design, product design, or drafting.
- Software Proficiency: 3 years experience with Expert-level proficiency in Autodesk Fusion 360, specifically within the Sketch, Solid, and Sheet Metal environments. In depth knowledge using Pronest. 2 years experience using Zoho ERP software.
- Manufacturing Knowledge: Deep understanding of 2D subtractive manufacturing principles, including laser cutting and CNC routing constraints, bend deductions, material thicknesses, and kerf widths. In depth knowledge of Mitsubishi CO2 laser cutter.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to take a rough concept or vehicle measurement and translate it into a fully functional, manufacturable flat-pack or folded sheet metal design.
- Portfolio: A strong portfolio demonstrating custom part design, sheet metal flat patterns, and successfully manufactured 2D-machined products. 2 years of Commercial vehicle upfitting specific experience.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
- Experience with 2D CAM software (e.g., LightBurn, VCarve, or Fusion 360's Manufacture workspace for 2D profiling).
- Hands-on experience operating CNC routers, laser cutters, or press brakes.
- Familiarity with the commercial vehicle industry or automotive aftermarket accessories.
- Experience taking physical measurements from vehicles to design custom-fit brackets and panels.
