Senior Financial Analyst
CURIE (Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange) located in Burlington, Ontario delivers cost effective, and solutions based, commercial insurance and risk management services to its members; Canadian post-secondary institutions in 9 provinces across the country.
The Senior Financial Analyst’s responsibilities include assisting with financial planning and budgeting processes, preparing and analyzing financial statements and reports. As a Senior Financial Analyst, you will also be responsible for providing financial guidance and assisting with monthly close processes.
You should be able to perform a variety of financial activities including planning, analysis, budgeting, and reporting. You should also have strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills and be able to present financial information and models in a concise and easily comprehensible manner.
Individual who is organized, with high attention to details, process oriented, self-starter who has a strong finance/accounting foundation with insurance industry experience that is capable of managing multiple projects with accuracy and tight deadlines.
This position directly reports to the Vice President, Finance & Operations with matrix reporting to Senior Vice President, Brokering Services.
Key Responsibilities
· Prepare and file quarterly & annual financial statements in compliance with IFRS.
· Prepare and file annual federal and provincial income tax returns.
· Prepare and analyze quarterly and annual financial materials for the Board meetings. Understand and effectively communicate financial results to management.
· Leading and overseeing accounts payables and receivables, bank reconciliation on a monthly basis with respective journal entries postings.
· Leading budgeting and monthly/quarterly close processes.
· Perform financial analytics as part of the quarterly reports.
· Proactively look for efficiencies in processes and policies, establishing and maintaining well documented internal controls register and process manuals.
· Assist in various implementation policies (e.g. new accounting system implementation).
· Working with VP Finance & Operations on ad hoc projects and supporting insurance Reciprocal and Brokerage operations when needed.
· Support the SVP, Brokering Services with monthly management reporting package
· Support the Principal broker with regulatory reporting requirements and statutory/financial audits (where required).
· Participate and encourage transfer of knowledge between staff of finance team.
Requirements
· Strong knowledge of IFRS and IFRS compliant financial statements and disclosures.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to accuracy and details.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to explain difficult concepts to audiences of different levels of understanding.
· Strong ability to manage multiple deliverables while driving desired results.
· Proven ability to build and maintain successful relationships with business partners.
· Proven flexibility, adaptability, and creativity to meet deadlines and manage priorities.
· Must have advanced Excel, Word skills and usage of AI tools.
· Highly motivated with the ability to consistently seek improvements to current processes.
Skills & Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, engineering or a related field and accounting designation (CPA or equivalent)
· Strong technical accounting experience in IFRS with min 7 years of accounting experience.
· Accounting designation (e.g. CPA).
· Insurance industry/Insurance brokerage knowledge with services and products and related market segments
· Experience with Applied Systems or other Broker Management System considered an asset.
