About Maple Bay Rowing Club
Maple Bay Rowing Club (MBRC) is a welcoming and community-focused rowing club located in the beautiful Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island. Our programs support athletes of all ages and abilities, with a strong focus on Junior development, lifelong participation in rowing, and fostering a positive club culture.
We are seeking an energetic and organized Head Coach to lead our rowing programs and help continue the growth of our Junior and Masters programs.
Position Summary
The Head Coach provides overall leadership for MBRC’s rowing programs and coaching staff. This role focuses on organizing programs, supporting athlete development — particularly within the Junior Program — and ensuring the safe and effective use of club equipment and facilities.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the MBRC Board, coaches, volunteers, and members to create a positive, inclusive, and high-quality rowing environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesProgram Organization
- Organize and oversee all club rowing programs
- Establish weekly practice schedules for all programs
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and support to coaches
- Plan and coordinate training programs for Junior athletes
- Support the development of both Junior and Masters rowing programs
- Ensure consistent coaching standards across programs
Coaching & Athlete Support
- Plan and lead regular on-water and land-based training sessions for Juniors and Masters
- Provide a high-level of coaching expertise and technical direction to Junior and Master rowers
- Plan and develop training program goals relevant to different ages and abilities
- Ensure safe, structured rowing practices
Regatta Coordination
- Attend regattas and ensure coach availability at Junior regattas
- Organize Junior registration and crew selection for regattas
- Assign and organize boats for regatta participation across Juniors and Masters
- Coordinate trailer and equipment transportation
- Help plan and promote the annual MBRC regatta
Equipment & Facilities
- Oversee set-up/rigging, maintenance, cleaning, and storage of rowing equipment
- Support safe and responsible use of boats, oars, and launches
- Coordinate minor repairs and work with the Equipment & Facilities Committee on larger repairs
- Ensure boathouse security and organization
Safety & Oversight
- Promote safe rowing practices during all programs
- Monitor weather and water conditions during practices
- Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive training environment
Qualifications
Required:
- NCCP Performance Coach Certification
- Minimum two years coaching experience
- Experience working with Junior rowers
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)
- First Aid (Intermediate) – CPR C & AED
- Basic rowing shell rigging and maintenance skills
- Strong collaboration, communication, and leadership skills
Assets:
- Trailering experience and towing capacity
- Experience working within a community sport environment
