This course will prepare students to teach French as a Second Language at the Elementary and Secondary levels in Core French, Extended French and French Immersion programs. It will equip them with the professional knowledge base needed to draw on past, continuing and emerging approaches (‘best practices’) outlined in pedagogical readings, the FSL curriculum, and Ministry documents to teach French to students for whom it is not a first language. They will develop a repertoire of strategies to develop and differentiate teaching units to meet culturally/linguistically diverse learners’ needs (including newcomer students with limited previous schooling), and a background in francophone culture and the Francophone minority community; all of which they can draw to develop learners’ French language proficiency across a range of skills by drawing on traditional and digital resources (websites, lesson ideas, games, templates, etc.) and incorporating multiple approaches to student assessment.
