Prairie North Group of Companies, a leading construction group based in Acheson, Alberta, Canada, is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our team. The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in the financial management of our company, ensuring that our financial practices follow accounting standards for private enterprises, regulatory requirements and best practices in the industry. This is a full-time position, reporting to the Vice President of Finance.
The successful candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented, and capable of supporting both day-to-day accounting functions and broader business initiatives. This role offers the opportunity to build structure, improve processes, and contribute strategically as the organization continues to grow.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger maintenance, and account reconciliations.
- Review financial transactions and ensure accurate coding, allocations, and reporting within Explorer Eclipse.
- Lead month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to reporting timelines.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management initiatives to help drive operational and financial performance.
- Develop, implement, and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
- Collaborate with external auditors, tax advisors, financial institutions, and regulatory agencies on compliance and reporting matters.
- Analyze financial results, monitor key performance indicators, and provide actionable recommendations to improve profitability and operational efficiency.
- Provide mentorship and leadership to accounting staff while helping establish scalable finance and reporting practices.
Requirements
Qualifications
- CPA designation.
- Progressive accounting experience with exposure to full-cycle accounting and financial reporting.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, internal controls, and financial analysis.
- Experience working with Explorer Eclipse or similar ERP/accounting systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office with expert knowledge of Excel.
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and present financial information clearly.
- Self-motivated, hands-on, and eager to contribute to the finance function.
