About the Role
Guildcrest is a CSA A277–certified volumetric modular builder delivering small‑ to large‑scale projects across multiple building types, including residential, multi‑unit, and other modular applications. While residential construction represents a significant portion of our work, candidates should be comfortable working across varied project types and structural conditions.
We are seeking an experienced Truss Designer with advanced proficiency in MiTek Engineering and MiTek Sapphire to support the design of roof and floor truss systems for modular construction projects. This role requires a high degree of independence, strong structural judgment, and the ability to work with minimal oversight in a production‑driven environment.
This is a technical truss design role, not a sales, estimating, or junior support position.
Key Responsibilities
Independent Truss & Structural Component Design
- Independently design and analyze roof, wall and floor truss systems using MiTek Engineering and MiTek Sapphire
- Develop truss layouts suitable for factory manufacturing, transportation, and modular assembly
- Exercise sound engineering judgment to resolve design challenges with minimal direction
- Optimize truss designs for structural performance, manufacturability, and material efficiency
Code & Engineering Compliance
- Ensure truss designs comply with:
- OBC / NBC Part 9 — Housing and Small Buildings
- OBC / NBC Part 4 — Engineered structural design using limit states design principles
- OBC / NBC Part 3 — Buildings of larger size, height, or occupancy
- Apply relevant standards, including:
- CSA O86 – Engineering Design in Wood, the Canadian standard governing structural wood design
- TPIC (Truss Plate Institute of Canada) standards and technical bulletins, governing metal‑plate‑connected wood truss design and industry practices
- Identify conditions requiring engineered oversight and coordinate appropriately
BIM / CAD Coordination
- Coordinate truss geometry, profiles, and load paths with AutoCAD and Revit models
- Manage accurate import/export workflows between MiTek software and CAD/BIM platforms
- Resolve coordination conflicts between truss designs and architectural or structural geometry
Volumetric Modular Integration
- Maintain awareness of load paths across module boundaries, including stacked or connected modules
- Consider impacts of module lifting, transport, and stacking on truss design and detailing
- Respond directly to factory and internal technical questions related to truss scope and intent
Multi‑Project Delivery
- Independently support multiple projects running in parallel, ranging from small‑ to large‑scale
- Maintain organized design files, calculation outputs, and revision records
- Communicate clearly and professionally in both French and English with internal teams and external partners
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional truss design experience
- Advanced proficiency in MiTek Engineering and MiTek Sapphire
- Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit coordination workflows
- Demonstrated understanding of OBC / NBC Parts 3, 4, and 9
- Solid background in wood‑frame and engineered wood construction
- Fully bilingual in French and English (spoken and written)
Education
- Diploma in Architectural Technology, Civil / Structural Engineering Technology, or related field
- Equivalent industry experience with demonstrated competency will be considered
Professional Attributes
- Highly independent, self‑directed, and comfortable working without constant oversight
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with sound structural judgment
- Detail‑oriented with high standards for accuracy and code compliance
- Demonstrated experience designing hinge trusses and similar complex truss conditions within MiTek software
- Clear communicator, capable of explaining technical decisions in both French and English
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing‑driven, modular environment where drawings have direct production consequences
Assets (Nice to Have)
- Experience in volumetric modular or prefabricated construction
- Exposure to mid‑rise, multi‑unit, or Part‑3‑triggering wood construction
- Familiarity with CSA A277 compliance environments
