About the Client:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a 96-year-old gentleman living independently in his home in Allenford, Ontario. He values his independence and has been managing well with some support, but his needs are increasing as mobility becomes more challenging. While his long-term memory remains strong and he engages well in conversations, his short-term memory has declined and he tends to repeat himself. He's very social, enjoys companionship, and loves outings to Tim Hortons. He currently has someone helping with cleaning and meal prep, so this role focuses specifically on personal care and hygiene support.
Responsibilities:
- Provide personal care assistance including sponge baths (shower upstairs is not accessible)
- Foot care including nail trimming and keeping feet clean
- Assist with dressing and putting on socks
- Support with toileting and hygiene needs
- Medication reminders and assistance with medication management
- Engage in meaningful conversation and provide companionship
- Monitor for any changes in condition or behavior and report to family
- Occasional accompaniment on outings (family will provide transportation)
- Complete visit notes after each shift
What We're Looking For:
- PSW certification or equivalent personal care training
- Experience with senior care, particularly with clients who have memory challenges
- Skilled in foot care and personal hygiene assistance
- Patient, calm, and comfortable working with someone who repeats themselves
- Strong communication skills with both client and family members
- Warm, engaging personality who can build genuine rapport
- Reliable and consistent - same caregiver each visit is essential
- Takes initiative and pays attention to changes in client's condition
- Respects client's independence while providing necessary support
- English speaking
- Comfortable working in a rural setting (Allenford is about 20 kilometers west of Owen Sound)
Schedule:
Once weekly visits, 3 hours per shift. Preferred days are Monday or Wednesday (not Friday as another caregiver visits that day). Preferred time is anytime after 10:00 AM, ideally between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, as the client sleeps more in the mornings. This is an ongoing position with potential to increase hours as needs change. The client is not recovering from surgery - this is long-term support that will likely expand over time as he continues aging at home.
Family Support:
Family members check in almost daily and manage groceries, banking, medications, and meal preparation. They are actively involved and want clear communication about any changes or concerns. You'll be working as part of a care team that includes another support person who handles cleaning and meal prep. An RPN will review the care plan with you before starting and family receives monthly reports based on visit documentation.
