Alberta Health Services (AHS) has a great opportunity to help you kick off your career as a Service Worker II (SW II) at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton! This role is aligned with the standard SW II classification, while offering a unique opportunity to contribute primarily within the Diagnostic Treatment Centre (DTC) – Surgical Unit Sterile Core, the equipment storage area. This position is primarily assigned to Sterile Core, approximately four days a week, with the remaining time supporting broader SW II duties as operationally required. Flexibility to assist across Operative Services is essential. In the Sterile Core, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting Operating Room (OR) supply and inventory carts and ensuring the availability of equipment and sterile products critical to surgical operations. Along with your ability to work independently, you maintain effective collaboration within the team including Assistant Head Nurse (AHN), OR leadership, Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD), and Contracting, Procurement and Supply Management (CPSM). We are seeking an individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills who can effectively escalate urgent supply needs when required. In addition, the incumbent will maintain flexibility to perform core SW II duties and provide essential support within the Operating Theatres, Pre-operative Area, and Recovery Room. Duties also include patient transport, environmental cleaning, restocking supplies, and the safe handling of medical equipment and sterile products.
Description:
As a Service Worker II, you will be responsible for readying supplies, and cleaning/disinfecting instruments and specialty equipment for immediate use/reuse by healthcare staff. You will distribute and replenish patient care supplies, perform quality control tests on equipment and record maintenance data. You may also transport patients (clients/residents), equipment, lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required. In addition, you will ensure that patient care areas and other assigned areas are accurately stocked and that specialty equipment required by the healthcare staff is available.

Required Qualifications:
Grade 12 or equivalent.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Recent experience (within the past 12 months) in a similar role within an operating room setting. Current Alberta Heart & Stroke Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider certification. WHMIS training with demonstrated application knowledge. Strong proficiency in reading, writing, and verbal communication in English. Excellent interpersonal skills with a strong ability to work collaboratively within a team. Demonstrated knowledge of the OR Supply/Inventory Carts and related workflows. Experience performing item and instruments pick-ups from MDRD and coordinating urgent supply needs. Ability to order and manage top-ups from MDRD and CPSM to maintain appropriate inventory levels. Effective communication and escalation skills with MDRD and CPSM regarding supply shortages and PAR level management of the OR Supply/Inventory. Ability to work independently while maintaining strong collaboration with AHN, OR Leadership, MDRD, CPSM, and the Equipment Coordinator. Physically capable of standing and walking for extended periods. Capable of safely lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 20 lbs. Reliable, cooperative, and adaptable to changing priorities. Able to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-demand environment. Knowledge of proper body mechanics is considered an asset. Demonstrates a genuine interest in healthcare and a commitment to supporting patient well-being.
Preferred Qualifications:
Proven experience in patient transport, as well as operating room cleaning and restocking.
