The Truck Driver III is a senior, highly experienced driver responsible for operating various heavy trucks to transport materials, equipment, and supplies to and from infrastructure project sites. This role requires advanced driving skill, strong knowledge of municipal civil construction operations, and the ability to work safely in high-traffic, tight, or complex environments.
Truck Driver III personnel play a key role in supporting excavation, material hauling, site servicing, and equipment mobilization activities. They must ensure safe, compliant, and efficient operation of trucks and attachments while maintaining Sierra’s standards for safety, quality, and productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the primary float driver, with the flexibility to operate other heavy vehicles as required.
- Haul aggregates, spoil, equipment, pipes, construction materials, and other loads to and from job sites.
- Maneuver safely in tight spaces, busy work zones, active traffic areas, and urban environments.
- Load and unload materials using proper procedures and ensure load balance and securement.
- Follow all OHSA, MTO, CVOR, and Sierra Construction safety requirements.
- Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with regulations.
- Maintain logbooks, inspection reports, and all required documentation accurately.
- Comply with load limits, securement regulations, and transportation safety laws.
- Report hazards, unsafe conditions, or mechanical issues immediately.
- Coordinate movements with site supervisors, equipment operators, spotters, and labourers.
- Communicate clearly using radios, hand signals, and verbal instructions.
- Maintain awareness of changing site conditions, traffic patterns, and pedestrian activity.
- Follow direction precisely when backing into trenches, loading zones, or restricted access areas.
- Conduct regular checks for leaks, defects, tire conditions, lights, brakes, and fluid levels.
- Maintain cleanliness of both the interior and exterior of assigned trucks.
- Report mechanical concerns promptly to Fleet or the Superintendent.
- Handle vehicles responsibly to reduce wear and extend service life.
- Ensure materials are loaded safely, evenly, and within legal weight limits.
- Secure loads using appropriate tie-downs, tarps, chains, or equipment as required.
- Assist with rigging, chaining, or securing equipment when float hauling is assigned.
- Verify material types, quantities, and locations prior to transport.
- Complete delivery tickets, haul sheets, time logs, and material tracking forms accurately.
- Maintain required documentation for inspections and regulatory compliance.
- Communicate material quantities, haul distances, or issues to field leadership promptly.
- Assist with general site activities such as moving materials, site cleanup, or labour support when required.
- Support emergency or after-hours hauling needs when scheduled.
- Perform other related duties assigned by the Superintendent or Working Foreperson.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned, whether specifically or generally related to the role
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- 5+ years of experience operating heavy construction trucks in civil or infrastructure settings.
- Valid DZ or AZ driver’s license (as required by vehicle type).
- Strong understanding of MTO regulations, load securement laws, and CVOR requirements.
- Proven ability to maneuver large trucks in tight or complex work zones.
- Experience hauling aggregates, excavation spoil, equipment, and construction materials.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work safely around heavy equipment and crews.
- Reliable, safety-focused, and capable of working with minimal supervision.
