Job Title: Health and Safety Coordinator - Construction Industry

We are seeking a knowledgeable and organized Health & Safety Coordinator to join our team. In this role, you will assist in maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations, support training initiatives, and ensure all safety documentation and reporting is accurate and up to date.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies, procedures, and programs in accordance with applicable legislation and industry standards.
- Conduct weekly site inspections, audits, and hazard assessments to identify risks and ensure compliance with company and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor and maintain compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), applicable regulations, and client-specific safety requirements.
- Support project managers, supervisors, and site personnel by providing guidance on safe work practices, hazard controls, and regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate and maintain health and safety documentation, including inspections, incident reports, training records, safety certifications, and compliance tracking.
- Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, injuries, and near misses, documenting findings and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Organize and track mandatory training, certifications, and renewals, including Working at Heights, WHMIS, First Aid/CPR, and other industry-specific requirements.
- Plan, develop, and deliver health and safety talks, toolbox talks, formal safety presentations, and awareness campaigns to field staff, supervisors, and management.
- Facilitate new employee health and safety orientations, ensuring all workers receive mandatory training and are familiar with company policies, procedures, emergency protocols, and site expectations prior to commencing work.
- Lead Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings by preparing agendas, documenting meeting minutes, tracking action items, and ensuring legislative requirements are met.
- Assist with the preparation of safety reports, statistics, and documentation required by management, clients, and regulatory agencies.
- Coordinate return-to-work and modified work programs as required.
- Ensure subcontractors meet company safety standards and maintain required safety documentation.
- Stay current with changes to health and safety legislation, regulations, and construction industry best practices, recommending updates to company programs when necessary.
- Support COR™, client prequalification processes, and other health and safety management system requirements as applicable.
Qualifications:
- Diploma or bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Construction Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of health and safety experience in the construction industry (ICI, civil, or industrial experience preferred).
- Valid Class G driver's licence and access to a reliable vehicle for travel to project sites.
- Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Construction Projects Regulation (O. Reg. 213/91), and applicable health and safety legislation.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to confidently deliver orientations, safety talks, toolbox talks, and formal training to workers, supervisors, and management.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive working relationships with workers, supervisors, subcontractors, and clients.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
- A passion for promoting workplace health and safety and a willingness to continuously learn and develop professionally.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
- Working at Heights, First Aid/CPR, JHSC Certification, NCSO®, CHSC®, CRSP®, or other relevant health and safety certifications are considered assets.
- Construction industry experience and/or health and safety certifications are considered assets but are not required.
