Campbell Litigation is seeking an experienced Litigation Law Clerk or Senior Legal Assistant to join our civil litigation practice.
We are a small, collegial team with a surprisingly broad and sophisticated litigation practice. Although we are a boutique firm, our files frequently involve issues, stakes, and courtroom work which many would associate with much larger firms. We appear regularly before the Superior Court of Justice and appellate courts, and represent clients in a wide range of commercial, professional negligence, construction, real estate, and personal injury disputes.
We are looking for someone who enjoys interesting work, meaningful responsibility, and being part of a team which takes its work seriously without taking itself too seriously.
What Makes This Position Different?
We believe excellent legal work and a healthy life outside the office are not mutually exclusive.
Accordingly, we offer:
- Four weeks' vacation.
- Competitive compensation commensurate with experience.
- Consistent, predictable (and manageable) hours.
- Relaxed dress code.
- No billable hour targets.
- No routine expectation of evening or weekend work.
- A supportive and respectful workplace.
- Interesting, challenging files without the bureaucracy of a large firm.
Our philosophy is straightforward: if we hire good people, treat them like professionals, and give them the tools they need to succeed, there is no need for micromanagement, arbitrary metrics, or unnecessary pressure.
Our practice is built on professionalism, accountability, and mutual respect. We maintain high standards, clear expectations, and a strong commitment to client service while fostering a collegial and enjoyable work environment. Team members are trusted to manage their responsibilities independently, contribute meaningfully to the success of our clients' matters, and take pride in delivering excellent work. The result is a workplace that offers both autonomy and structure, where talented professionals can thrive and build rewarding careers.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be experienced, organized, resourceful, and capable of working independently.
This role may be particularly attractive to someone who:
Has significant civil litigation experience.
- Enjoys taking ownership of files.
- Can identify problems and propose solutions without waiting to be told what to do.
- Values autonomy and professional trust.
- Appreciates a collaborative environment where everyone contributes.
- Is looking to leave behind the pressure, bureaucracy, and constant metrics often associated with larger firms.
It may also appeal to someone who trained or worked in a larger Toronto practice and is now looking for a more balanced, sustainable, and enjoyable professional environment without sacrificing the quality or complexity of the work.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include:
- Managing litigation files from intake through resolution.
- Drafting correspondence, pleadings, motion materials, application records, and other litigation documents.
- Preparing mediation, discovery, and trial materials.
- Coordinating with clients, experts, witnesses, opposing counsel, and court staff.
- Organizing productions and documentary records.
- Managing deadlines and maintaining file organization.
- Assisting with trial preparation and attendance where appropriate.
About Us
We are proud of the quality of our work, the relationships we build with our clients, and the culture we have created.
We work hard during the day. We help one another. We enjoy what we do. We maintain high professional standards. But we also understand that people have families, interests, and lives outside the office.
If you are looking for a position where your judgment is trusted, your contribution matters, and your work will be both challenging and rewarding, we would be pleased to hear from you.
