Are you an experienced accounting professional ready to step into a leadership-track role? We’re seeking an Assistant Controller to join our growing team at a well-established petroleum retailer and wholesaler.
This in-person position offers broad exposure to operational accounting and financial management. You will support the Controller in financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, and process improvement while supervising key accounting staff and helping strengthen systems and procedures across the organization.
This is a succession-planning role. The Assistant Controller will work closely with management and will take on increasing responsibility over time, with the opportunity to advance into a Controller position based on performance and business needs.
Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Assistant Controller to join our finance team. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in supporting the financial operations of the organization, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with accounting and fuel regulatory standards. The position provides hands-on exposure to operational decision-making, regulatory reporting, and financial planning in a growing distribution business.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation of monthly government reports and financial statements.
- Participate in and progressively assume responsibility for the monthly and year-end close process.
- Oversee payroll processing and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
- Perform account analysis and reconciliation for various accounts.
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable functions to maintain accurate records.
- Collaborate with the Controller to develop budgets and forecasts.
- Ensure timely completion of audits and assist with external audit requests.
- Support the implementation of internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Provide guidance and training to junior accounting staff as needed.
What We're Looking For
- Progressive accounting experience, including senior or supervisory responsibilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Relevant experience will be considered.
- Strong knowledge of payroll processes and regulations.
- Proficiency in a variety of accounting software.
- Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail for account analysis and reconciliation tasks.
- Familiarity with budgeting processes and financial forecasting.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while managing multiple priorities effectively.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
