JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Graphic Designer
Department: Marketing
Report To: Marketing Manager
1. JOB STATEMENT:
The York University Student Centre (YUSC) is seeking a creative and detail-oriented Graphic Designer to support the design and marketing needs of the organization. Reporting to the Marketing Manager, the Graphic Designer will be responsible for producing digital and print design assets that promote YUSC programs, services, and brands. This role requires strong communication and collaboration skills, a deep understanding of the York U student audience, and a passion for visual storytelling.
2. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
A. Design & Branding
- Create print and digital marketing materials to support events and promotions for the York University Student Centre, Break Room, and Cornerstone Catering brands. Examples include flyers, posters, brochures, banners, and social media assets.
- Design menus for all food service locations and brands under the YUSC umbrella.
- ·Develop branding materials including logos, apparel designs, signage, uniforms, and promotional merchandise.
- Produce administrative materials such as business cards, stationery, forms, schedules, and agendas.
- Maintain brand consistency across all materials and platforms.
B. Financial & Administration
- Contribute innovative ideas to design campaigns tailored to diverse campus audiences including commuter and residence students, clubs, services, university departments, and student governments.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and stakeholders to understand creative briefs and project requirements.
- Adapt designs for various formats and platforms while maintaining high visual standards.
- Complete any other design-related tasks as assigned by the Marketing Manager or Executive Director.
C. Human Resources
- Uphold anti-oppression principles and contribute to a respectful, inclusive workplace culture.
- Conduct research and gather relevant information to support departmental goals.
3. RELATIONSHIPS:
The Graphic Designer reports directly to the Marketing Manager and works closely with other members of the Marketing team. They are also expected to maintain respectful and professional relationships with YUSC staff, management, and external partners.
4. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
- This is a part-time position based in an office environment, with flexible scheduling depending on project timelines and academic availability.
- The role involves regular computer use and design software, requiring prolonged screen time and attention to detail.
- The environment is fast-paced and deadline-driven, especially around peak promotional periods.
- Occasional extended hours may be required for project completion or event deadlines.
- Work is primarily sedentary but may include light physical tasks such as setting up promotional materials or displays.
5. POLICIES & EXPECTATIONS
- Adhere to all YUSC organizational policies, including confidentiality, intellectual property, health and safety, and anti-oppression principles.
- Comply with work hour and conduct policies.
- Participate in orientation and training sessions provided by the Marketing Manager or YUSC.
6. LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Build a professional design portfolio that reflects real-world client work and collaboration.
- Enhance creative and technical design skills using industry-standard software and tools.
- Develop communication, time management, and teamwork skills in a dynamic campus environment.
- Learn how to integrate feedback into design processes and apply strategic thinking to creative projects.
7. JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary program at York University (Graphic Design or related field preferred).
- Prior experience in graphic design roles.
- Proficient with Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign; knowledge of After Effects is an asset.
- Familiarity with York U campus culture and the needs of various student demographics.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to take initiative.
- Comfortable working under pressure with multiple deadlines.
- Flexible availability throughout the academic year.
Pay: $17.60 per hour
