Job Summary
The Intermediate Underwriter, under the direction of the Underwriting Team Lead, is responsible for reviewing applications, analyzing risk exposures, and determining the acceptability of risks in accordance with company policies and legislated guidelines. This role includes underwriting and quoting new business, renewals, and endorsements, determining appropriate premiums, coverages, terms, and conditions within delegated authority, and developing strong broker relationships. We are seeking an underwriter with a strong interest in agriculture and rural communities to join our Underwriting team. The successful candidate will support new and existing business through sound underwriting judgment, responsive service, and strong relationships with producers, brokers, colleagues, and insureds. Experience or lived experience connected to farming, agriculture, or rural communities is considered a strong asset.
What You Have
-
3-5+ years of underwriting experience
-
Strong knowledge of farm risk exposures, including livestock, crops, barns, machinery, and liability
-
College diploma or certificate
-
Working toward CIP considered an asset

Prior underwriting authority levels and broker-facing experience

Experience underwriting and quoting new business, renewals, and endorsements

Ability to assess exposures, analyze risk, and determine appropriate premiums, terms, coverages, and conditions within delegated authority

Demonstrated independent underwriting judgement and sound decision-making skills
-
Experience with mid-to-large and more complex accounts

Strong negotiation skills, including experience discussing pricing, coverage, and underwriting terms

Good knowledge of insurance legislation, regulations, policy features, and underwriting best practices

Strong analytical, investigative, and critical thinking skills, with the ability to identify and mitigate risk using flexible and creative underwriting approaches

Demonstrated time management and organizational skills, with an appropriate sense of urgency

Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills

Ability to work independently as well as part of a distributed team

High level of integrity, accountability, and professionalism

Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, web-based applications, and broker/carrier systems, with the ability to adapt to new technology quickly
