Manual Lathe Machinist (Journeyperson or Apprentice)

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Manual Lathe Machinist, offering both Journeyperson and Apprentice opportunities, to join our manufacturing team. This role involves setting up, operating, and maintaining manual lathes and related machining equipment to manufacture and repair precision components. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, experience working to tight tolerances, and the ability to read and interpret technical drawings. Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual lathes to manufacture, repair, and modify precision components
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and technical specifications to determine machining requirements
- Select appropriate tooling, speeds, feeds, and cutting methods for various materials and applications
- Perform precision machining operations including turning, facing, boring, threading, grooving, and taper turning
- Use measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and dial indicators to verify dimensions and tolerances
- Inspect finished components to ensure compliance with quality standards and customer specifications
- Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on machine tools and shop equipment
- Operate additional manual machining equipment such as milling machines, drill presses, band saws, and grinders as required
- Assist with assembly, fitting, and repair work when necessary
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Follow all safety procedures, PPE requirements, and company policies
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to efficient workflow within the shop
Qualifications
- Journeyperson Machinist certification or enrollment in a Machinist Apprenticeship program is preferred
- Experience operating manual lathes in a manufacturing, maintenance, or repair environment
- Strong understanding of machining practices, tooling, materials, and precision measurement techniques
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and work instructions
- Proficiency with precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Basic mathematical skills including geometry, fractions, decimals, and trigonometry relevant to machining
- Experience with manual milling machines and other conventional machine shop equipment is considered an asset
- Experience with preventative maintenance and repair of equipment an asset
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team while maintaining high quality standards
- Commitment to workplace safety and attention to detail
- Must have valid class 5 drivers license
