Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Peer Support Worker will provide individualized one-on-one support to campers requiring additional assistance, fostering inclusion and encouraging active participation in daily camp activities and schedules. Promote a positive and inclusive environment for all campers and staff by demonstrating sound judgment, initiative, and supportive peer engagement strategies. Maintain effective communication with parents, caregivers, and camp staff regarding participant progress, daily activities, behavioural observations, and any concerns, while completing required documentation and reports accurately and professionally. Collaborate cooperatively with all day camp staff to support the successful delivery, safety, and overall operation of the summer day camp program.
Accountabilities:
- Establish trusting, supportive, and non-judgmental connections with campers, acting as a positive role model.
- Encourage campers to take part in daily camp activities (e.g., recreational, and social) to boost confidence and social skills.
- Monitor campers with needs/concerns and support campers using appropriate protocols/procedures.
- Interact with and support all day camp campers.
- Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers.
- Monitor and provide leadership to campers during both large and small group activities
- Inform Recreation Manager of any staff or camper issues.
- Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff.
- Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually.
- Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of campers and information.
- Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., set-up, and camp cleanup.
- Perform other related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
- Working environment is in a day camp setting both indoor and outdoor in generally agreeable conditions with the following exceptions, exposure to tantrums and noise.
- Ability to lift, carry or move up to 29 lbs. without assistance from others.
- This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time.
- Some flexibility in scheduling is required.
Normal hours of work: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and includes a ½ hour paid meal break. The hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
- This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
- aged 17 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment;
- a valid Social Insurance Number;
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
- International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.
- Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible
- An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.
Canada Summer Jobs Program requirements apply. Individuals who required employer-specific work authorization (e.g., international students on study permits) are not eligible under this program. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
Completed a minimum of grade eleven (11).
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Up to one (1) year of prior experience working directly with children in a day camp setting.
- A current valid Standard First Aid + CPR & AED (Intermediate First Aid) certification is an asset.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $21.03 with a maximum of $25.23.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
