Position Summary:
The Maternal Child Health Coordinator (MCHC) leads the delivery of maternal and child health programming for Woodland Cree First Nation (WCFN), providing comprehensive support to families with child(ren) ages 0-6. This role combines direct client support with program leadership, community outreach, and coordination with health and social service providers. The MCHC promotes healthy pregnancies, positive parenting, early childhood development, and overall family well-being through culturally safe, holistic, and informed practices grounded in Woodland Cree’s values and traditions.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of WCFN’s maternal and child health program for families with child(ren) ages 0-6 in accordance with FNIHB and ISC guidelines, delivery frameworks and community needs
- Conduct regular home visits to pregnant women, new mothers, and families with young children to assess needs, provide support, and monitor well-being
- Assist families in accessing healthcare services including scheduling medical appointments, specialist referrals, and connecting them with community and external resources
- Plan, organize, and facilitate workshops including but not limited to: Parenting workshops, Baby Blanket/Breastfeeding Pillow workshops, Canning & Preserving workshops
- Plan, organize and facilitate Family Day Activities
- Provide education, training and resources including but not limited to: Car seat training, child development and positive parenting
- Respond to urgent or crisis situations involving maternal or child health concerns, following established protocols
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, social workers, RCMP, Child and Family Services, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive and coordinated care for families
- Collaborate with Elders and Knowledge Keepers to integrate traditional knowledge and cultural practices into programming
- Liaise with the Medical Transportation Coordinator to support families in accessing transportation to medical appointments
- Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records of home visits, client assessments, program activities, and services provided as well as oversee data collection and reporting requirements
- Monitor program expenditures and assist with budget tracking
Qualifications:
- Post secondary education in nursing, social services, public health or related field
- 2 years’ experience working in health care, specifically in maternity or early childhood care
- Knowledge of maternal health, prenatal and postnatal care, infant development, and early childhood well-being
- Familiarity with FNIHB maternal and child health program guidelines and ISC reporting requirements
- Understanding culturally safe care, and holistic approaches to Indigenous family health and wellness
- Knowledge of community resources and health and social services available to First Nations families in Alberta
- Valid Alberta driver’s license
- Ability to provide driver’s abstract
- Criminal Record check and Vulnerable Sector check
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, boundaries, and professionalism
