The Equipment Operator II is a skilled operator responsible for safely and effectively performing basic to moderate excavation, material handling, grading, and site-support tasks on infrastructure projects involving sewer, watermain, road, and utility construction. This role requires solid equipment competency, safe work habits, and the ability to work closely under direction from Forepersons and Superintendents.
Equipment Operator II personnel typically handle standard excavation and earthworks tasks, supporting pipe crews, road crews, and general civil work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate assigned heavy civil equipment such as skid steers, small–mid size excavators, backhoes, loaders, and compact equipment.
- Perform excavation, trenching assistance, backfilling, loading, stockpiling, and rough grading tasks.
- Operate equipment around active crews while maintaining clear visual and radio communication.
- Support pipe installation, site preparation, and general earthworks activities.
- Follow all OHSA regulations, Book 7 requirements, and Sierra Construction safety policies.
- Complete daily pre-operation inspections and report unsafe conditions or equipment issues.
- Maintain safe operating distances from utilities, trench edges, other equipment, and personnel.
- Utilize spotters and signalers when required; never operate blindly.
- Always demonstrate proper use of PPE and safe operating practices.
- Complete tasks efficiently in accordance with the daily work plan provided by the Foreperson or Superintendent.
- Support production goals by operating efficiently and minimizing downtime.
- · Assist in staging materials, moving equipment, and maintaining safe, organized work areas.
- Adjust equipment operation based on changing site conditions and direction from site leadership.
- Perform basic excavation and grading to the correct depths and slopes with supervision.
- Follow layout markings, grade stakes, and direct instructions accurately.
- Avoid damaging utilities, installed infrastructure, and adjacent structures.
- Assist with ensuring trenches, subgrade areas, and work zones are prepared correctly for installation crews.
- Perform daily inspections, fueling, greasing, and cleaning of equipment.
- Identify mechanical issues early and notify the Foreperson or Superintendent.
- Keep equipment organized, secure, and operated in a manner that prevents unnecessary wear.
- Work collaboratively with labourers, pipe layers, and other operators to achieve safe, coordinated workflows.
- Communicate clearly regarding movements, hazards, and equipment needs.
- Receive and follow instructions accurately to support efficient field operations.
- Assist with general labour tasks when not operating equipment.
- Support traffic control, material organization, and site housekeeping.
- Perform additional field duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Working Foreperson.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned, whether specifically or generally related to the role
Required Knowledge and Experience:
- 1–4 years of experience operating heavy civil equipment in infrastructure or construction environments.
- Competent operation of small–mid size excavators, skid steers, backhoes, loaders, or equivalent equipment.
- Understanding of excavation safety, trenching practices, and working around underground utilities.
- Ability to interpret layout markings, basic grades, and direction from site leadership.
- Reliable, safety-focused, and able to operate under supervision.
- Valid operator tickets/certifications as required.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation.
