About Musqueam
We are traditional hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ speaking people. Today, we are a strong, growing community of over 1,300 members. We live on a small portion of our traditional territory, known as the Musqueam Indian Reserve, located south of Marine Drive near the mouth of the Fraser River. The name Musqueam relates back to the River Plant, the name of the plant is məθkʷəy̓. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) - People of the River Plant. We have always moved throughout our territory using the resources it provides for fishing, hunting, trapping and gathering. We remain distinct and our cultural practices are strong, despite the devastating impacts of residential schools, colonial laws banning our ceremonies, and other attempts to assimilate our people. Our lands and waters continue to support our cultural and economic practices while serving as a source of knowledge and memory, encoded with our teachings and laws. Position Summary
Reporting to Recreation Manager, the Summer Recreation Leaders will work in a dynamic teamwork environment to plan and deliver a fulsome summer program for youth, adults and Elders. Youth should be prepared to act as role models and to create safe spaces for younger youth and to provide space and welcoming environment for adults and Elders.
This is a temporary, paid full-time internship for 8 weeks for youth aged 15 to 30 as part of the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program under Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS).
In support of Musqueam's commitment to building community capacity and creating opportunities for youth, preference will be given to qualified Musqueam youth. Qualified Indigenous applicants are also encouraged to apply.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Create monthly/weekly schedules and community notices.
- Prepare activities and supervise activities on and off site.
- Supervise and participate with children and youth in activities.
- Communicate with community members and recreation staff regarding the program.
- Maintain a work journal, fill out incident reports, and make progress reports to Recreation staff.
- Assistance with community events as needed.
- Participate in required daytime training sessions over several days.
- Other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Willingness to work with community, youth, children, adults and Elders.
- Willingness to work with a large team to ensure the successful delivery of the program.
- Some experience in working with community would be an asset.
- Must be self-motivated and able to work under minimal supervision.
- Must have good communication skills and enjoy working in dynamic environments.
- Must be prompt and reliable.
- Must have a Social Insurance Number.
- Proficient use of computers and Word/Canva/Excel is an asset.
