Position Summary
The Field Mechanic is a key member of the Carman Construction service team, responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of the company’s heavy trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment. Working primarily out of a fully equipped service truck, the Field Mechanic travels to active job sites and the company yard to keep the fleet safe, productive, and compliant. The role demands strong technical judgement, sound safety practices, and the ability to communicate clearly with operators, supervisors, and customers.
Minimum Requirements
· Certificate of Qualification as a Truck and Coach Technician (Ontario 310T) OR Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (Ontario 421A).
· Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence in good standing; Class DZ or AZ is considered an asset.
· Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and safety issues on heavy trucks and equipment.
· Working knowledge of diesel engines, drivetrains, brake systems (air and hydraulic), hydraulics, and electrical/electronic diagnostics.
· Comfortable working independently in the field with minimal supervision.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document daily activities, work orders, and service reports.
· Ability to work safely and professionally with co-workers, customers, subcontractors, and the public.
· Physically capable of performing field repairs in varied weather, including lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
· Willingness to complete additional training as required by Carman Construction, our clients, applicable legislation, or the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
Preferred Qualifications
· Previous field-service experience on construction or heavy-equipment fleets.
· Welding and fabrication experience (MIG, stick, oxy-acetylene cutting).
· MTO Annual Safety Inspection (Motor Vehicle Inspection) licence, or willingness to obtain one.
· Air-conditioning refrigerant handling certification.
· Experience with OEM diagnostic software (e.g., Cummins INSITE, Detroit Diesel DDDL, CAT ET, John Deere Service ADVISOR).
Summary of Essential Job Functions
Duties include, but are not limited to:
· Diagnosing and repairing heavy trucks, trailers, and heavy construction equipment in the field and at the road shop.
· Performing scheduled preventive maintenance, inspections, and component replacements.
· Responding to fleet breakdowns and dispatched service calls in a safe, timely, and professional manner.
· Operating and maintaining a fully stocked service truck, including parts, fluids, tools, and PPE.
· Ensuring the use of all mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) by everyone on site and in the shop.
· Maintaining accurate work orders, service reports, time entries, and a written daily log.
· Reporting all incidents, injuries, near-misses, and hazards to the appropriate parties.
· Following and complying with all Carman Construction investigation and reporting practices.
· Maintaining equipment service records and identifying recurring issues for the Shop Manager.
· Meeting with subcontractors as required to confirm adherence to safety requirements and submission of daily timesheets specifying hours worked, number of workers, and equipment hours.
Working Conditions
· Field-based role; the majority of work is performed outdoors at active construction sites and at the road shop.
· Approximately 50 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturdays as workload requires.
· Carman Construction provides a fully equipped service truck. The Field Mechanic is expected to maintain it in clean, road-ready, and well-stocked condition.
· The Field Mechanic is expected to provide their own personal hand tools. Specialty tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop consumables are supplied by Carman Construction.
· Work is performed in varying weather conditions and may include lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing, kneeling, and working at heights or in confined spaces.

Pay: $35.00-$40.00 per hour
