Position Summary:
The Lead Powerline Technician will oversee and ensure the safety, productivity, and quality of construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical transmission and distribution systems. They will provide technical leadership, coordinate crews and work activities using safe work practices, always being aware of personal, team member and client safety. The Lead Powerline Technician will work closely with the Estimator/Project Manager to provide field input for tenders, participate in site visits, and support field verification to ensure accurate scope, pricing, and execution planning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Follow all company, client and regulatory OH&S requirements including safe work practices and reporting unsafe conditions. Participate in job planning/tailboards, safety meetings, worksite inspections and participate in incident investigations and corrective actions.
- Oversee daily operations including planning, scheduling for the install, maintenance and repair of electrical distribution systems including overhead and underground power lines and cables, erection of pole systems, insulators, conductors, lightning arrestors, switches, transformers, street lighting and other associated equipment, including termination.
- Lead and mentor a team of PLT’s and Apprentices by supporting training, competency assessments, and career development.
- Participate in pre‑bid walk downs, and post‑award field visits to assess site conditions, access constraints, material requirements, and constructability.
- Provide technical input during tender preparation, including realistic labour production rates, equipment needs, crew sizing, and sequencing.
- Review drawings, specifications, switching orders, system maps and client documents to validate constructability and installation approach.
- Supporting change management by identifying scope variations and assisting with documentation for change orders.
- Acting as a technical liaison between field crews and the Estimator / Project Manager during project startup and execution ensuring timely execution of projects.
- Provide technical expertise in live line work, powerline construction, troubleshooting and infrastructure upgrades.
- Work with various types of heavy equipment including aerial booms, diggers (RDB), backhoes, trackhoes, nodwells, tension stringing equipment, and skid steers. Maintain and operate company vehicles and equipment responsibly.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Powerline Journeyman certification recognized in Alberta.
- Good physical coordination and manual dexterity. Possess strength and stamina and the use of proper lifting techniques, with the ability to lift more than 25 kilograms
- Sufficient understanding of mechanical concepts and principles
- Strong communication skills
- Good hearing and colour vision
- Possess valid driver’s license with acceptable drivers abstract
- Comfortable working at heights in varying extreme environmental conditions
- Able to work in confined spaces
- Safety certifications: Common Safety Orientation CSTS 2020 with WHMIS, First Aid, Ground Disturbance Level 1I, H2S, Fall Protection
Preferred:
- Red Seal Endorsed Journeyman certification
- Minimum 5-10 years of Powerline Technician experience
- Minimum 5 years in lead or foreperson role
- Working knowledge with estimating systems
Work Environment:
- Working outdoors in varying environmental conditions
- Travelling to various work sites, including remote areas
- Frequent strenuous work including heavy lifting, carrying and reaching
- Climbing poles or towers
- Working from a bucket attached to an aerial lift boom
- Entering manholes and underground vaults
- Standby duties
- After hours response calls
- Other hazards associated with the trade and individual job setting
