Job Description: Night Worker – Awake
Position Title: Child and Youth Worker (Overnight)
Reports To: Live-In Treatment (LIT) Program Manager / Program Supervisor
Position Summary
The Night Worker – Awake is responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and well-being of youth residing in the Live-In Treatment (LIT) program during overnight hours. This position ensures compliance with agency policies, youth supervision standards, and environmental cleanliness requirements.
Qualifications
· Child and Youth Worker (CYW) Diploma or equivalent (e.g., degree or diploma in Psychology, Social Services, or related field).
· Valid Criminal Reference Check with Broad Record Check.
· Valid Class G driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
· Current Understanding and Managing Aggressive Behaviour (UMAB) certification.
· Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
· Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage crises efectively, and act in accordance with agency and legislative standards.
Key Responsibilities
Client Care and Supervision
· Maintain a safe, nurturing, and structured environment for youth in accordance with agency policies, professional standards, and the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA).
· Conduct regular safety and security checks of the LIT immediately upon the start of the shift, and regular checks throughout the shift.
· Follow each youth’s safety, behavior, and risk management plan, ensuring appropriate supervision levels are maintained.
· Dispense medication(s) as prescribed by a physician, in accordance with agency medication policies and procedures, including all required documentation and reporting. This duty is performed only when authorized and required.
· Conduct and record physical checks on each youth throughout the night, ensuring these checks occur at staggered intervals of every 10 to 15 minutes.
· Ensure that, regardless of gender, there is always at least one staf member present on the top floor whenever more than one youth is occupying the upstairs bedrooms, to support safety and supervision for all youth.
· Remain attentive, awake and available for the youth for the entire duration of the shift.
· Support morning routines by assisting youth to be up, prepared, and ready for school.
Administration and Documentation
· Accurately complete and submit required documentation—including night logs, daily log statements, direct service hour records, and incident reports—in a timely manner as per agency policy and ESA record-keeping standards.
· Communicate all relevant client information to the multi-disciplinary team using the agency’s approved communication tools.
· Participate in a culture of continuous improvement by providing and receiving constructive feedback.
Facility Cleanliness and Safety
Ensure nightly and weekly cleaning standards are upheld to promote a safe and hygienic living environment.
Nightly duties include:
· Complete laundry (wash, dry, fold, and store).
· Tidy youths’ belongings and communal spaces.
· Sweep and mop all floors; clean and disinfect all bathrooms and common areas of the LIT.
· Empty and dispose of garbage and recycling.
· Prepare meals or ingredients as directed for the following day.
Weekly duties include:
· Deep clean kitchen appliances (refrigerator, stove, microwave).
· Discard expired food and organize pantry storage.
· Maintain cleanliness of cupboards and food storage areas.
Professional Development
· Participate in regular supervision meetings and an annual performance review with the Program Manager/Supervisor.
· Attend staf meetings, in-service trainings, and mandatory professional development sessions.
· Maintain certifications in UMAB, First Aid and CPR, and Medication Training.
Working Conditions and ESA Compliance
· Hours of work and scheduling are determined by the Program Manager/Supervisor and posted in advance according to the LIT schedule.
· Night shifts are generally 8 hours in duration, in compliance with the ESA’s daily and weekly maximum hours provisions.
· Employees are entitled to applicable rest periods, meal breaks, and overtime pay per ESA standards.
· The position involves working with youth who may demonstrate complex, aggressive, or high-risk behaviours.
· Must be able to drive to perform job-related duties when required.
