Overview
The Operations & STEM Program Manager is a dynamic, hybrid leadership role responsible for overseeing the daily logistics, calendar management, and event execution of the Halton STEM Club, while also stepping directly into the classroom.
This position requires a unique blend of organizational mastery and technical curiosity. You will bridge the gap between families, volunteers, and the classroom by managing logistics and master calendars, while also actively co-teaching and guiding our FIRST LEGO League (FLL) teams. From organizing complex event logistics to troubleshooting a student's robot design or building new class content, you will be the driving force behind a seamless and inspiring STEM experience.
Key Responsibilities1. FLL Instruction, Coaching & Technical Leadership
- Classroom Instruction: Step into the classroom to lead or co-teach FIRST LEGO League (FLL) programs, facilitating an engaging, high-energy learning environment.
- Technical Problem Solving: Guide and mentor student teams through mechanical design, building, and programming challenges (e.g., LEGO Spike Prime/Mindstorms). Act as the go-to troubleshooter for hardware and software glitches during sessions.
- Curriculum & Content Creation: Develop, refine, and structure weekly class content, lesson plans, and seasonal challenges aligned with FLL project and robot game objectives.
- Technical Material Management: Systematically organize, audit, and maintain all technical equipment, including LEGO kits, sorting bins, sensors, motors, laptops, and FLL challenge mats/field sets.
2. Calendar & Event Coordination
- Master Schedule Ownership: Develop, maintain, and publish the master calendar for all weekly club tracks, competitive FLL timelines, seasonal camps, and workshops.
- Event Management: Lead the end-to-end planning and execution of STEM fairs, mock FLL tournaments, open houses, and exhibitions (including venue sourcing, setup/teardown, and volunteer scheduling).
- Session Readiness: Ensure classrooms, tech/kit logistics, and mentor schedules are fully aligned ahead of every weekly session.
3. Stakeholder, Student & Volunteer Management
- Parent Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for families. Manage onboarding, provide updates on FLL tournament timelines, and address feedback with empathy and professionalism.
- Volunteer Coordination: Recruit, onboard, screen (including Vulnerable Sector Checks), and schedule high school/university mentors. Empower volunteers to effectively support teams during FLL build sessions.
- Student Experience & Safety: Oversee student registration, attendance tracking, and balanced team formations. Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and the club's code of conduct.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Experience: 2–4 years of experience in program coordination, camp operations, or educational leadership, combined with hands-on experience teaching or coaching youth in a STEM/robotics environment.
- Technical & FLL Familiarity: Direct experience with FIRST LEGO League (FLL Explore or Challenge) or deep familiarity with LEGO education platforms (Spike Prime, EV3/Mindstorms, block-based or Python programming).
- Content Development: Proven ability to build or adapt educational content, STEM workshops, or instructional lesson plans for elementary and middle school students.
- Organizational Mastery: Exceptional project management skills with a knack for keeping physical inventory (thousands of LEGO bricks!) and digital calendars meticulously organized.
- People & Communication Skills: Outstanding communication skills tailored for a diverse audience—clear and reassuring for parents, engaging and encouraging for students, and structured for volunteers.
- Compliance: Must possess (or be willing to obtain) a valid Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) and First Aid/CPR certification.
