Overview
Hardy Sales is a family owned food distribution company operating across Canada. We're looking for a Purchasing Manager to take ownership of our inventory and purchasing operations — someone who's sharp, detail-oriented, and genuinely enjoys the complexity of a fast moving distribution environment.
This is a hands-on role where your decisions have real, visible impact. You'll be close to the details of what we buy, when we buy it, and why, while also looking for ways to improve how we operate. Over time, this role is expected to grow in scope as our purchasing function evolves.
What You'll Do
- Own purchasing and inventory decisions across our BC and Alberta operations
- Forecast demand and make data-driven buying decisions that keep service levels high while minimizing shortages and excess stock
- Issue purchase orders for regular replenishment, spot buys and seasonal needs, including commodity products and consumer packed goods
- Keep item master data, product specs, and purchasing records accurate and up to date in our systems
- Directly manage one purchasing staff member, including day-to-day oversight, performance, and development
- Participate in onboarding or hiring as the team evolves
- Build and maintain solid supplier relationships with clear communication, agreements and reliable supply
- Develop a deep understanding of our product mix, customer demand, and market conditions
- Find ways to improve how we purchase, report, and manage inventory visibility
- Support sourcing of new products and suppliers as needed
- Occasionally attend industry events or food shows to stay current on the market or develop new opportunities
What We're Looking For
We want someone who takes ownership, communicates clearly, and follows through. Whether you've come up through a large organization or a smaller one, what matters is that you can operate effectively in an environment where decisions move quickly and team work is essential.
Specifically:
- Strong inventory instincts: you understand the cost of being out of stock and the cost of carrying too much
- Comfort with systems: you can work within an ERP and other systems
- Commercial awareness: you're curious about products, suppliers, and opportunities to improve
- People leadership: you're comfortable managing, developing, and having direct conversations when necessary.
- Clear communication: you can coordinate across locations, teams, and external partners without things falling through the cracks
Our product mix is complex and there's a learning curve, but if you enjoy getting into that kind of detail, you'll find a lot to work with here.
Qualifications
- 5+ years in purchasing, procurement, supply chain, or inventory management
- Proven experience with demand forecasting and data-driven buying
- Comfortable working in ERP or inventory management systems
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Experience managing or supervising others is an asset
- Ability to manage and communicate across multiple sites and teams
- Food, protein, or perishable goods experience is an asset
Please note: This role is full time in office, 7:30AM-4:00PM, Monday to Friday. Occasional travel is required to our BC location or to international food shows.
Pay: $80,000.00-$95,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Discounted or free food
- Extended health care
- Paid time off
- Profit sharing
Work Location: In person
