Job Overview
The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for up to four regular full-time Animal Control Officers to join our team of professionals in the Bylaw Enforcement Division, Bylaw Enforcement Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager, Bylaw Community Safety, in this unionized position you will be responsible for inspections and regulatory work related to animal control. While working within established procedures and policies, this position involves extensive public relations contact and requires a considerable level of tact and diplomacy.
Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas including roads, parks and public spaces for animal control bylaw violations
- Investigate animal-related complaints and issue written notices or tickets for violations
- Catch/seize dangerous, stray and feral animals and injured wildlife, arrange veterinary and transport/rescue animals in emergency situations including fires and floods, as required
- Pick up deceased animals from public spaces
- Issue verbal warnings, written notices and infraction tickets and recommend charges as appropriate
- Provide information and assistance to the public related to bylaws, animal care and welfare matters
- Prepare investigation files, reports and evidence for prosecutions and testify in court as required
- Maintain liaison with law enforcement, Fire Department, Public Works and related municipal agencies
- Assist with the less complex general bylaw matters including parking, nuisance, noise, property standards and unsightly premises, ensuring compliance with applicable bylaws and regulations
- Perform related work as required
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses related to animal care, bylaw enforcement, or regulatory investigations, plus some experience related to enforcement, animal control or regulatory work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Considerable knowledge of the bylaws and regulations governing animal control and bylaw enforcement
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, procedures and equipment used in the catching, handling and safe transport of dangerous, stray, sick and maimed animals
- Sound knowledge of investigation and enforcement methods and court procedures and rules of evidence
- Ability to safely handle a range of animals with different temperaments
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle used in the work and skill in the use of equipment used
- Ability to support general bylaw enforcement duties and adapt to varied calls for service
This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a Position of Trust. The successful candidate will be required to have a Police Information Check as a condition of employment (not required as part of the application process, however, will be required upon consideration for employment).

- BC Class 5 (full privilege) Driver’s License.
