The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and North West region is seeking a qualified individual to join our Rainy River detachment.
Note: During this selection process, candidates are required to undergo mandatory requirements of psychological evaluation, background investigation and security clearance check. Candidates who have successfully completed the psychological evaluation, background investigation and security clearance check will be invited to attend ten (10) weeks of in person training in Orillia. All mandatory requirements as listed must be completed prior to assignment to a team.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 6,400 uniformed officers, 2,900 civilian employees and 530 Auxiliary officers. We provide essential services that ensure the safety and security of the people of the Province of Ontario. The Rainy River District Detachment Administrative Centre is located in Fort Frances and we have satellite detachments in the communities of Atikokan and Rainy River serving 10 municipalities and unorganized territory. A new detachment building opened in September of 2020 in Fort Frances. The District also has 9 First Nations communities that are policed by Treaty Three Police Service with which we enjoy an excellent working relationship and mutual support.
Highway 11 and Highway 71 are the main connecting links within the Rainy River District. There are two international Canadian/United States ports of entry located at Fort Frances and Rainy River connecting to their respective twin communities of International Falls and Baudette, Minnesota. The District of Rainy River has a population of approximately 18000 people, with the largest community being the Town of Fort Frances with 8500 citizens.
The Rainy River District has all the public and private services and facilities needed for you and your family to enjoy a high quality of life. Confederation College, Seven Generations Education, and primary and secondary schools, hospitals, medical clinics, community arenas, sports facilities for baseball, soccer and golf; including 4 area golf courses and a recreation centre in Fort Frances with 2 ice surfaces, indoor pool, squash courts and gym. The District also boasts some of the best outdoor activities available anywhere. Hunting, fishing and boating are enjoyed in our vast wilderness areas and our numerous waterways including Rainy Lake and Rainy River which straddle the U.S./Canada border enabling marine travel to recreation locations both in Ontario and to the resorts and attractions of Northern Minnesota.

What can I expect to do in this role?
You will manage court case files for a Detachment, providing liaison services with the court and monitoring the progress of files through the court system. To provide court security services for the detachment and court and to participate in the escort of offenders.
- Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation including a psychological assessment
- Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent), college diploma or university degree (or equivalent)
- Ability to attain and maintain Special Constable status
- Ability to pass and maintain ongoing certification in Use of Force
- Must be a Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or permanent resident status and legally entitled to work in this country
- Proficiency in application software programs to prepare, update, and maintain records.
- Written communication skills to compose and prepare court-related documents.
- Organizational skills to coordinate and track documentation and case file arrangements.
- Oral communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with Judges, Crown Attorneys, defense lawyers, police officers, and the public.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to interact with prisoners to ensure cooperation during escort and court proceedings.
- Ability to assess documentation requirements and follow up on missing or incorrect paperwork.
- Initiative to identify and resolve issues, such as scheduling conflicts or prisoner attendance errors.
- Decision-making skills related to day-to-day case management and document processing.
