At Trade Winds to Success Training Society, our mission is to empower Indigenous individuals in Alberta by providing pre-trades training. We are currently seeking a Carpentry Instructor to work with the Residential Construction Program (RCP) Manager in the delivery of our Outreach Residential Construction Program, including practical training through the Eco-Smart Home curriculum and build.
This role involves direct instruction, on-site supervision, and mentoring of Indigenous students preparing for employment in the trades. The ideal candidate is a Journeyperson Carpenter who is passionate about sharing their knowledge and helping others succeed in a safe and respectful learning environment.
This contract (August 24, 2026 to November 13, 2026) will be in Lethbridge, providing an opportunity to work and assist individuals in their journey toward successful trades careers.
In line with our mission, we actively collaborate with funders and various stakeholders to engage potential program participants. The responsibilities include:
- Provide carpentry instruction using adult learning principles in line with the Eco-Smart Home curriculum.
- Support and supervise students on the Eco-Smart small home build, ensuring alignment with Alberta Building Code, blueprints, and construction plans.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized workshop and job site at all times.
- Manage, track inventory, and order materials as needed upon approval by the RCP Manager.
- Monitor student progress and provide feedback, support, or intervention as appropriate.
- Participate in student evaluations, progress meetings, and reporting as needed.
- Support the development of training materials and suggest improvements to instructional content.
- Enforce shop safety rules and, when necessary, address non-compliance by taking appropriate corrective action.
- Identify and support at-risk students and assist with problem-solving related to barriers to employment with the support of the Student Services Manager.
- Promote teamwork, mutual respect, and cultural sensitivity in a diverse training environment.
KEY COMPETENCIES
- The successful candidate will possess a strong ability to motivate and teach Indigenous students by adapting instruction to their individual learning styles.
- They will have a solid understanding of how to provide effective carpentry training aligned with Alberta Apprenticeship and Alberta Building Code standards.
- An eye for detail and accuracy in reading and interpreting blueprints is essential.
- The role also requires physical capability, including the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at heights.
- The candidate should be dependable, adaptable, and able to meet deadlines while remaining flexible to changes in project timelines or classroom needs.
- A commitment to safety, professionalism, and maintaining a respectful and inclusive training environment is vital.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Applicants must be a certified Journeyperson Carpenter local to Lethbridge with relevant experience in residential construction.
- 2 to 3 years of experience working with Indigenous clients or in Indigenous communities is an asset, demonstrating cultural awareness and sensitivity.
- Additionally, candidates should have 2 to 3 years of experience instructing or coaching adult learners, ideally within a trades or technical training environment.
- Strong communication skills, patience, and a passion for education are key assets.
REMUNERATION
This is a contract position in Lethbridge, with hours being Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The salary for this role ranges from $39 to $41 per hour, based on a 40-hour work week.
