About Sancon Commissioning
Sancon Commissioning has provided commissioning, startup, and operational readiness services for large industrial project for 20 years throughout North America. With our continued expansion into the utility-scale power generation facilities across North America, we are seeking an experienced commissioning professional with a proven background in utility power generation and gas turbine facilities to support our continued growth.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute throughout the complete project lifecycle—from proposal development and planning through commissioning, startup, and project completion.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership in the development, planning, and execution of utility-scale power generation commissioning projects. This role combines technical expertise, business development support, project planning, and field execution.
The successful candidate will work closely with Sancon's sales, estimating, planning, and project execution teams, as well as clients, EPC contractors, equipment vendors, and plant owners.
Travel throughout Canada and the United States will be required, along with the flexibility to work remotely when project requirements permit.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties:
Business Development & Technical Sales Support
- Support the Sales Team by providing technical expertise during business development activities.
- Participate in client meetings, technical presentations, and proposal review meetings.
- Assist in identifying technical solutions that align with client requirements.
- Contribute to the continued growth and expansion of Sancon Commissioning's service offerings and client relationships.
Estimating & Project Planning
Working closely with the Estimation & Planning Manager, the successful candidate will:
- Assist in the preparation of technical proposals and bid submissions.
- Review project scope and contract documents.
- Support development of commissioning execution strategies.
- Develop commissioning sequences.
- Assist with preparation of commissioning schedules.
- Review and develop commissioning procedures and test documentation.
- Participate in project risk reviews and constructability assessments.
Project Execution
Upon award of projects, the successful candidate will participate in project execution by acting as either:
- Subject Matter Expert (SME)
- Commissioning and Start-Up (CSU) Manager
- Senior Commissioning Engineer
Responsibilities include:
- Leading commissioning activities from mechanical completion through commercial operation.
- Coordinating commissioning teams and subcontractors.
- Managing client interfaces.
- Supporting system turnover and completions management.
- Directing commissioning planning and execution.
- Supporting startup activities.
- Oversee project controls.
- Managing commissioning documentation.
- Supporting performance testing and project closeout.
- Providing technical troubleshooting during startup and commissioning.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must possess:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Power Engineering, or related discipline), or an equivalent combination of education and extensive industry experience.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in a Canadian province or eligibility for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Minimum 10 years of experience on utility power generation projects.
- Minimum 5 years of direct commissioning experience on utility-scale power generation facilities.
- Demonstrated experience commissioning gas turbine power generation facilities.
- Strong understanding of:
- Commissioning planning and execution
- Startup and operational readiness
- Functional testing
- System turnover
- Performance testing
- Plant operations
- Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO)
- Safety management systems
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Strong communication and leadership abilities.
- Ability to work independently while leading multidisciplinary project teams.
Required Technical Experience
Candidates should have experience with one or more of the following:
- Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPP)
- Simple Cycle Gas Turbine Plants
- Cogeneration Facilities
- Peaking Power Plants
- Utility substations
- Balance-of-Plant (BOP) systems
Experience with commissioning and startup of equipment including:
- Gas turbines
- Steam turbines
- Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs)
- Generators
- Generator Step-Up (GSU) transformers
- Electrical switchgear
- Motor Control Centres (MCCs)
- Protection and control systems
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
- Excitation systems
- Plant auxiliary systems
- Fuel gas systems
- Cooling water systems
- Instrumentation and control systems
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or legally authorized to work in Canada.
- Be eligible to obtain the necessary visa and authorization to travel and work in the United States.
- Be able to satisfy U.S. entry requirements, including successfully passing any required background screening and having no restrictions that would prevent cross-border travel.
- Hold a valid driver's licence.
- Be willing and able to travel extensively throughout Canada and the United States.
- Be flexible to work remotely, from client offices, or at project sites as required.

Pay: $50.00-$75.00 per hour
