The Niagara Regional Native Centre (NRNC) is an Indigenous-led, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the social, cultural, and economic well-being of Indigenous people in the Niagara Region. Through culturally appropriate programs rooted in tradition, compassion, and respect, NRNC provides services in justice, health, education, and community development.
NRNC’s Get Set Program focuses on helping Indigenous participants build foundational life and employability skills, including literacy, essential skills development, and readiness for further education or employment opportunities.
Position Overview
NRNC is seeking a dedicated and community-focused Literacy Assistant to support literacy programming within the Justice Division and the Get Set Program.
In this role, you will assist in delivering literacy, life-skills, and employability-related training to Indigenous clients, helping them build essential skills in reading, writing, math, and computer applications. You will also contribute to program coordination, client support, and administrative functions.
Schedule
- Monday to Friday: 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
- 40 hours per week
- Includes 1-hour paid lunch
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct client intake, assessments, and registration using database systems
- Develop individualized learning plans and training goals
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and documentation
- Assist in developing and delivering curriculum in:
- Literacy (reading, writing, grammar, math)
- Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, web searching, email setup)
- Facilitate and support workshops and training sessions within the Get Set Program
- Monitor and assess client progress regularly
- Assist with marking assignments and supporting client projects
- Coordinate guest speakers to support learner engagement and motivation
- Support event coordination and NRNC newsletter promotion
- Complete database entries and monthly reporting requirements
- Collaborate with internal programs (e.g., GED delivery, Apatisiwin program)
- Provide administrative and occasional media-related support
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a related field
- Experience working with adult learners (preferred)
- Experience working within an Indigenous community-based organization (preferred)
Requirements
- CPIC with Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Valid driver’s license
- Driver’s abstract
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Understanding of social barriers and challenges faced by urban Indigenous communities
- Ability to develop and deliver curriculum for adult learners
- Strong facilitation and presentation skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Strong organizational, time management, and report-writing skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners
- Knowledge of Indigenous community services and supports
