HR Consultant (Contract)
Location: Nanaimo, BC — on-site sessions with remote availability between visits

About the role
We're a small optometry office looking to bring in an experienced HR consultant on a contract basis to support our compliance with WorkSafeBC and BC Employment Standards. We've already built out much of our HR foundation internally and are looking for a knowledgeable third party to deliver staff training and serve as an on-call resource for the occasional question or concern that falls outside our day-to-day management.
This is a flexible, ongoing engagement rather than a full-time position — ideal for an established HR professional running their own practice.
What you'll do
- Deliver short, practical training sessions on-site (roughly 30–45 minutes each) on core HR and workplace topics — for example, respectful workplace / anti-harassment, WorkSafeBC obligations, and employment standards basics.
- Be available on-call to answer questions or address concerns from staff or management that can't be resolved internally by our office manager or owner.
- Provide guidance on keeping our policies and practices current with BC employment legislation and WorkSafeBC requirements.
- Offer occasional ad-hoc advice on HR matters as they arise.
What we're looking for
- Demonstrated experience in human resources, ideally with small businesses in British Columbia.
- Solid working knowledge of the BC Employment Standards Act and WorkSafeBC requirements.
- A CPHR designation (or working toward one) is an asset but not required.
- Comfortable delivering training to small groups in a clear, approachable way.
- Operates as an independent contractor with their own liability insurance and WorkSafeBC coverage (or sole-proprietor exemption).
- Responsive, discreet, and able to handle sensitive matters with professionalism.
Engagement details
- On-site training sessions scheduled periodically by mutual agreement.
- On-call availability for questions between visits.
- You'll invoice us for your time; this is a contractor relationship, not employment.
