Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Tax Manager to join our growing accounting and advisory practice. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing corporate and personal tax engagements, providing strategic tax planning advice, and supporting clients with complex tax and accounting matters. This role requires strong technical tax knowledge, excellent client relationship skills, and a solid understanding of investment accounting and taxation.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance & Planning
- Manage and review corporate income tax returns (T2), personal tax returns (T1), trust returns (T3), and related tax filings.
- Provide proactive tax planning and advisory services for owner-managed businesses, professionals, high-net-worth individuals, and family groups.
- Research and interpret Canadian tax legislation and provide practical recommendations to clients and internal teams.
- Assist clients with tax-efficient corporate structures, reorganizations, estate planning, and succession planning initiatives.
- Review tax provisions and support year-end financial statement engagements from a tax perspective.
- Identify tax-saving opportunities and ensure compliance with federal and provincial tax regulations.
Investment Accounting & Taxation
- Analyze investment portfolios, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, ETFs, private investments, and real estate holdings.
- Review and advise on investment-related tax matters, including capital gains, dividends, interest income, foreign reporting requirements, and tax-loss planning.
- Assist clients with tax implications of investment transactions and wealth accumulation strategies.
- Support clients with foreign asset reporting requirements, including T1135 filings.
Client Management
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and serve as a trusted advisor.
- Respond to client inquiries regarding tax and accounting matters in a timely and professional manner.
- Work closely with business owners, investment advisors, lawyers, and other professionals to provide integrated solutions.
- Assist in business development initiatives and identify opportunities to expand client services.
Team Leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and review the work of junior staff and senior accountants.
- Provide technical guidance and training on tax matters and best practices.
- Participate in workflow management and ensure deadlines are met during busy tax seasons.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum 5 years of Canadian tax experience in a public accounting firm.
- Strong knowledge of Canadian corporate and personal taxation.
- Experience preparing and reviewing T1 and T2 tax returns.
- Knowledge of tax planning strategies for owner-managed businesses and individuals.
- Strong understanding of investment accounting and taxation.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines effectively.
Preferred
- CPA designation (or CPA candidate nearing completion).
- Completion of, or enrollment in, the CPA In-Depth Tax Program is considered an asset.
- Experience with tax research tools and accounting software such as TaxPrep, CaseWare, QuickBooks, Xero, and related applications.
- Experience dealing with CRA audits, reviews, and correspondence.
